The CAISO Wholesale Originator position within the NRG Business team will be responsible for originating, structuring, and negotiating electric commodity transactions with a focus on the CAISO/WECC wholesale power market. This individual will work closely with the NRG West Trading Desk and the NRG Business Sales Teams to help facilitate deal flow and manage internal and external issues related to pricing and closing transactions. This individual will be expected to act as a subject matter expert, well-versed in CAISO/WECC market fundamentals and capable of explaining key market dynamics to a variety of audiences. This individual will build and establish relationships with customers (i.e. utilities, banks, trading counterparties, asset developers, power generators, CCA’s) with the intent to grow customer flow business as well as execute structured transactions. The ideal candidate should have a strong working knowledge of the CAISO/WECC physical power market to structure transactions and generate value for NRG. This role will require a highly motivated and transactional individual as performance will be measured on executed transactions.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Originate, structure and negotiate power transactions in CAISO/WECC that support Commercial Operations and the C&I Sales Team.
- Work with internal groups (including Sales, Legal, Risk, Costing, Structuring, Trading, and others) to manage all issues surrounding retail deals and help facilitate and close transactions.
- Understand and be willing to explain market fundamentals and dynamics to audiences with varying levels of energy related knowledge
- Lead sponsor in “selling” the strategic rationale and deal economics for structured transactions (i.e. coordination with West Trading Desk, Structuring Team, Legal, and Credit in developing deal summary for management review).
- Co-develop and support long term growth strategy for the NRG portfolio in coordination with Business, Commercial Operations, and other key groups across the organization.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of power marketing or power trading experience is required
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required
- Advanced knowledge of the electric utility industry, electric energy markets, and market fundamentals, (especially in CAISO/WECC) is required
- Advanced knowledge of customers and customer segments (Utilities, IPPs, developers) is required
- Advanced knowledge of options, basis risk, hedging, losses, congestion, demand management, and other power marketing concepts is required.
- Strong commercial skills and proven “hunter” that identifies and closes large wholesale power transactions.
Working Conditions
- Evening and weekend work, while not the norm, may be required as business needs dictate
- Up to 25% travel requirement to establish and maintain customer business

The salary range for this role is $169,840-$305,760. Pay is based on several factors, including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc.
