Job Summary: 

The Manager/Sr. Manager, Trader Compliance will be responsible for contributing to the development of NRG’s existing trade compliance program, continuing the development and implementation of a first-class program commensurate with NRG’s standing as a Fortune 500 company.  NRG’s trading operation is regulated by a number of Federal or National authorities, including but not limited to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the Canada Energy Regulator (CER); and state or provincial regulators (e.g., the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), Ontario Energy Board (OEB), and the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC)).These agencies require implementation of a proactive program which, i) ensures compliance with their regulations and ii) detects and deters inappropriate trader behavior that could result in market manipulation.  In response to these ever-evolving regulations and the magnitude of its trading activity, NRG is seeking to enhance its preventative and active monitoring of trading patterns and trader behavior to minimize the potential for abusive market activity (intended or unintended) and to become a strategic thought leader in the energy trade compliance space.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the team’s subject matter expert regarding compliance with applicable natural gas interstate and intrastate pipeline rules and regulations.
  • Review NRG’s existing trade compliance program, identifying potential areas for improvement, particularly with respect to natural gas commodity and pipeline transportation transaction compliance.
  • Provide support to Market Operations and various corporate functions including Risk, Legal, and Regulatory Affairs personnel to ensure compliance with the rules set forth by the applicable external regulatory agencies and Exchanges.
  • Monitor the enforcement arms of applicable regulatory bodies, particularly FERC and CFTC to evaluate penalties assessed related to energy trading activity and sharing findings/observations with the RC team and the Market Operations team as appropriate.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all compliance requirements relating to the Company’s energy trading activities.  Assess impact of new and revised compliance requirements and identify necessary revisions to existing program policies and procedures.
  • Traveling periodically to participate in industry forums related to energy trading, engage with NRG’s industry trade organizations regarding trade compliance matters, or to collaborate with NRG personnel located outside of primary office location, as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Position location open to Princeton, NJ (preferred) or Houston, TX (quarterly travel to Princeton, NJ office required)
  • Position is designated as hybrid, meaning three days per week in the office, two days per week remote.
  • Open office environment.
  • Periodic travel required (20%).

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field of study.
  • Minimum of five years (5) of directly related experience in energy trading, or in a compliance role at an exchange, ISO/RTO, or governmental regulatory oversight body is required (substantial experience with trading and/or scheduling of natural gas required). 
  • Knowledge of trading operations, trade strategies, and/or rules and regulations related to trading on a Designated Contract Market (DCM) is required.
  • Significant demonstrated knowledge of FERC’s natural gas shipper-must-have-title and capacity release rules.
  • Knowledge of ISO/RTO power products (including FTRs and virtual transactions), trading strategies and protocols.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of swaps and derivatives as used in the energy industry and how such trading activities may interact to create the appearance of market manipulation.
  • Detailed knowledge of major regulations applicable to energy trading, including the Commodity Exchange Act, FERC Order 670, Prohibition of Energy Market Manipulation, and FERC’s gas pipeline capacity release rules.
  • Active in energy industry trade groups/associations

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proactive, analytical self-manager with critical thinking skills and keen judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with all levels of internal or external groups.
  • Strong people skills and ability to work in both team environments and independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams.
  • Excellent attention to detail, highly organized with an initiative-taking approach.
  • Strong analytical ability and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with Nasdaq’s NTS is a plus.
  • Experience with Aligne, Endur or trade capture systems in general is a plus.
