 Duties:

  • Under direct or general supervision regularly and customarily performs the most skilled type of work on general machine shop equipment and makes mechanical repairs to all types of steam and diesel equipment.  This includes such work as the following illustrative duties, together with other related work:
  • Operates lathes, planers, drill presses, and milling machines on the most complicated assignments, or those requiring extremely close tolerances.
  • Makes, or assists in making, internal inspections of turbines, fans, pumps, condensers, air ejectors, regulating valves and other similar or related equipment.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance plans on mechanical equipment including Pdm activities.
  • Aligns motors and steam driven equipment and trues and balances rotating equipment.
  • Replaces bearings, packing in pumps and valves, shaft sleeves, seats and other miscellaneous parts used in power plant equipment.
  • Assists special representatives during major inspections of turbines and other major power plant machines and equipment.
  • Does carpentry, joinery, and other plant building maintenance and incidental construction work
  • Does miscellaneous cutting, operates oxygen and acetylene torches
  • Does gas and/or arc welding equipment to perform mechanical repairs and fabricated plant equipment.
  • Does pipefitting type work not including instrument lines or tubing.
  • Directs and assist in providing skill enhancement training and instructs others assigned to assist him or her.
  • Operates power equipment (forklift, cranes, high-reach, scissor lift, etc.) and automotive equipment when required.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with management and other personnel. 
  • Recognize safety hazards and follows safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of environmental rules and regulations and effectively applies them to all work situations.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • In addition to the above and other related work of similar grade, a Qualified Machinist will be assigned to any other work of equal or lesser skill within the capabilities of the individual, to meet emergencies or other operating needs

 

  Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must have 3 years of industrial mechanical experience in the repairs, inspection and/or maintenance of power plant or machine shop equipment including inspection and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, fabricating and diagnostics. 
  • Must possess a high degree of skill and working knowledge of general maintenance activities and procedures including, ultrasonic, greasing, oil changes and vibration monitoring.
  • Must be thoroughly skilled in the operation of all shop installed machine tools such as lathes, planers, and drill presses.  
  • Ability to certify as a pressure welder (preferred).  As a certified must have the ability to make welds on vessels, valves, turbine, boilers, piping etc.
  • Must be skilled in the use of portable power tools, hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Must be familiar with the maintenance of all types of mechanical power plant equipment.
  • Must be able to exercise judgment acceptable to the Company in matter of relatively moderate importance and limited scope.
  • Must be qualified to regularly direct and instruct other helping on the same or related work.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with the Company’s electrical and mechanical tagging rules.
  • Must be willing and able to work extra and/or irregular hours.
  • Must be and remain thoroughly familiar with the Company’s safety rules applicable to this and related jobs.  Must be capable of applying resuscitation and be able to render practical first aid.
  • Employee must be able to work inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in the Power Plant Environment.  Work around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment, high noise areas, and /or confined spaces. 
  • Employee must be able to climb stairways, ladders, work from man-lifts, perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, shoveling, climbing, lifting tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. 

 

 

Please Note:  Salary offered will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s education and/or experience and in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement covering this position.
