Job Summary

 Under direct or close supervision regularly and routinely operates auxiliary boiler, steam turbine and other power plant equipment.  This includes such work as the following illustrative duties, together with other related work.

 

Job Duties

  • Responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sound operation of power plant equipment including boiler, turbine and auxiliary equipment and informs supervision and other plant personnel of any unusual conditions.
  • Performs routine inspections and rounds of equipment and observes and records readings on indicating instruments.
  • Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.
  • Performs equipment isolation and lockout tagout.
  • Assist in troubleshooting operational issues.
  • Applies knowledge of steam power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision-making and work tasks.
  • Operate computers and printers.
  • Discerns and responds to verbal and auditory signals from operating system.
  • Works without supervision while carrying out duties.
  • Performs preventive and minor maintenance of various plant equipment.
  • Meets the physical requirements of the job such as perform tasks while standing, walking, climbing and squatting.
  • Works with extended reach above head and in front of body and lift 50 pounds and carry while walking distances up to 10 feet.
  • Operates automotive, forklift and other equipment when required.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Responds to overtime requests as needed.

 
In addition to the above and other related work of a similar grade, a Plant Equipment Operator will be assigned to any other work of equal or lesser skill, within the capabilities of the individual, to meet emergencies or other operating needs.

 


  Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must successfully complete pre-job testing requirements.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must work well in a team environment.
  • Must possess a demonstrated ability to learn and make sound decisions.
  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, hot and cold temperatures and moderate to high noise environments.  This position requires a person to occasionally bend, stoop, reach, push, walk, stand and climb.
  • Must be willing and able to work extra and/or irregular hours including holidays and weekends.
  • Must possess or be able to promptly obtain the appropriate vehicle operator's license.
  • Must be willing and able to work a shift schedule.

 

Preferred/Additional Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Prior experience in the power generation operations and maintenance or an equivalent.
  • Knowledge of steam power plant system operations and basic power plant principles.
  • Ability to perform multiple task or assignments at the same time.
  • Post-secondary education in the power generation field is desirable.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and associated software.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and make sound decisions to resolve them based on skill area knowledge of plant operations and equipment.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment to direct activities of others and provide job instructions.
  • Ability to operate computer systems to receive, analyze, comprehend and input data.
  • Ability to learn mechanical & electrical controls, equipment and power plant equipment operation.
  • Ability to read, schematic diagrams, procedures and technical manuals.
  • Good electrical and mechanical aptitude. 
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability and willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrates and maintains high personal standards of performance, responsibility and professionalism.

 

Please Note:  Salary offered will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s education and/or experience and in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement covering this position.
