Job Summary and Responsibilities:

The Plant Operator- MSO is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of all Plant equipment under his control in accordance with written plant procedures and under the direction of the Operations Shift Supervisor. The Operator can at times work with a Maintenance Mechanic on duty, who if needed can help assist with starting and/or stopping Plant machinery and equipment. In the absence of specific orders and/or directives, the Operator exercises initiative, using experience and good judgment in Plant operation. Comply with company policies including those concerning safety and environmental.


  • Under the general supervision of the Operations Shift Supervisor,
  • Oversee the safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sound operation of plant equipment
  • Understand and execute the equipment clearance procedure
  • Properly operate boiler, steam turbine,  plant auxiliary equipment and systems, combustion turbines and auxiliaries during normal and emergency operation
  • Communicate information clearly, both orally and written
  • Assist others in performance testing
  • Troubleshoot plant equipment to resolve operational problems
  • Generate and review Work Requests for execution of equipment repair
  • Operate various computer systems to receive, analyze, comprehend and input data
  • Monitor and record data available through the use of various instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures
  • Implement Plant Emergency Procedures as needed
  • Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret meter and gauge readings
  • Assist maintenance personnel in performance of maintenance activities to include use of tools, equipment and Company vehicles
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Communicate conditions of plant system and equipment to others
  • Apply knowledge of steam power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision-making and work tasks
  • Operate computers and printers
  • Discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel
  • Work without supervision inspection while carrying out duties
  • Take, record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation
  • Meet physical requirements of the job such as perform tasks while standing, walking, climbing and squatting.
  • Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment and maintain operating licenses
  • Work may require cross training



Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of 6 months with plant operations or maintenance experience in an industrial setting or related field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment and perform effectively without close supervision.
  • Must be computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and e-mail required.
  • Must receive a score of “Recommended” on NRG’s Skills Assessment testing


The successful candidate must:

  • Be able to perform effectively in a team environment without close supervision,
  • Have the ability to work well with and through others inside and outside of NRG.
  • Use discretion concerning confidential and sensitive company information, demonstrate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment to 345KV, high noise areas.
  • Work in all temperatures and climate conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
  • Performance of duties requires working rotating shifts and response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week.


Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or out-doors work environment. Out-doors environment at generating plant locations include: working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations)
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle; valid driver's license is required.
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Requires operation of a personal computer.
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
