Job Summary:
The Sustainability Senior Manager role works on the definition and achievement of NRG’s corporate sustainability goals. This position works with internal and external stakeholders to advance NRG’s sustainability programs across our operations, customers, communities, and value chain. As a core member of the Sustainability Team, the Senior Manager will lead and support a wide variety enterprise-wide projects to develop and deliver of an integrated strategy and program, with associated goals aimed at driving business results, reducing risk, and enhancing brand value.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Lead cross-enterprise sustainability initiatives, working collaboratively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, to drive business results, minimize impacts and risks, and protect and enhance the Company reputation.
- Help compile data and craft responses for external reports, including NRG’s annual sustainability report and supplemental disclosures, raters and rankers or investor surveys, and industry surveys. Leverage external feedback and scores to continuously improve performance and enhance NRG’s reputation.
- Assess the impact of revisions to environmental standards and collaborate with key stakeholders to develop and facilitate a response on behalf of NRG.
- Analyze federal, state as well as international legislation and regulations that could impact the environmental goals of the NRG business. Work in tandem with internal teams and industry groups to assess the business implications, communicate recommendations to leadership, and coordinate a multi-faceted response.
- Evaluate emerging solutions and product offerings that could improve environmental performance related to NRG’s electricity and natural gas products. Embed sustainability into retail products and services for NRG’s consumer and business customers.
- Actively engage in updates to NRG’s sustainability strategy, such as a climate transition plan, with goals and targets, which balances environmental goals with business goals.
- Ensure NRG policies are current and continue to address the business need, and that products and solutions adhere to internal quality standards which protect NRG’s reputation.
- Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to develop internal and external communication strategies to publicize the company’s sustainability efforts to protect and enhance the NRG reputation
- Serve as an internal leader and subject matter expert on sustainability, monitoring emerging trends, technologies, partnerships, and business models. Communicate and educate others, including senior leadership.
- Leverage excellent communication skills to translate complex sustainability concepts and data into understandable and actionable terms for non-experts.
- Support building sustainability metrics into short and long-range business planning, capital planning, and operations planning.
- Provide guidance on company responses to questions or statements of position on sustainability-related matters including potential policy positions.
- Identify and prioritize areas for sustainability efforts and recommend strategies for proactively addressing relevant sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities in the short, medium, and long term.
- Engage with diverse groups of stakeholders regarding the company sustainability program. Stakeholders may include investors, rating agencies, sustainability standards bodies, industry groups, academia, employees, and NGOs.
Working Conditions:
- Must be willing to travel overnight up to 15%
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in a role with an emphasis on environmental / sustainability related activities
- Experience in the energy industry
- Demonstrated experience working on public policy or regulatory topics
- Strong collaborator with heightened interpersonal and influencing skills
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- An ability to synthesize and conceptualize complex ideas
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in greenhouse gas emissions accounting
- Knowledge of market-based environmental products, such as RECs, EACs, offsets, certified natural gas, or renewable natural gas
- Background working with sustainability standards, environmental policy, or regulatory affairs
- Proficiency with MS Excel, Power BI, and other data visualization tools for tracking sustainability performance

MBA or master’s degree in Sustainability or related field from an accredited university.
Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Possess a network of sustainability, environmental or energy professionals across civic and business demographics who may be strategic partners or clients.
- Strong knowledge of trends in sustainable business ranging from policy, operations, and reporting.
- Knowledge of sustainable product and service offerings in the retail energy or smart home industry
- Willingness to take initiative and possess outstanding project management skills.
- Intellectually curious, open to new ideas, hypothesis-driven, and fact-based
- Works with minimal oversight, managing multiple, concurrent assignments effectively and makes timely decisions; problem-solver in face of time and resource constraints.
- Approaches issues and problems through teamwork and collaborative efforts.
- Ability to listen and must accord respect to divergent points-of-view.
- Works effectively on a team composed of people with diverse backgrounds.
- A passion for sustainability, with a strong personal commitment to advancing environmental, social, and governance practices within the organization and industry.
