Job Summary:
NRG is looking for a Manager, Data Science Projects to develop and apply models and statistical analysis within our enterprise data science group. This individual will work within a functionally organized Data and AI group including Platform, Data Engineering and Governance, Data Science, Gen AI Solutions, Business Intelligence, and Product Management. Its scope encompasses electricity and gas contracts, plant operations, trading, and energy services. The role will report to the Sr. Director, Data Science. It will be a player-coach role to work on and manage those who work on cross-functional project teams to deliver repeatable and scalable data solutions to drive value for the organization. This role will primarily be responsible for ensuring delivery of projects via consulting partners and managing the detailed work in a way that confirms transition and supportability of the work product after engagements complete. This will require both an understanding of the intersection between business economics and the use of algorithms to make or aid business decisions.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Manage as a player-coach with hands on capabilities and provide detailed technical direction to Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Gen AI Solutions personnel
- Significantly deep understanding of machine learning, tree-based models (e.g. GBM, xgboost, random forest), and Bayesian statistics to select and implement for prediction, classification, and clustering projects
- Significantly deep understanding of generative AI models and techniques including prompt engineering, RAG tokenization and chunking, keyword and semantic search, agent to agent communication, and reasoning
- Apply statistical modeling or machine learning or optimization methods to optimize marketing efforts with respect to customer acquisition, retention, attrition, and pricing
- Develop algorithms or software when necessary to implement useful quantitative methods found in academic research
- Apply best practices via code reviews, design of model performance tracking, champion/challenger model schemas
- Understanding of the business context of projects and able to identify areas where models will be less predictive or have caveats to their predictive powers
- Ability to translate complex business issues into achievable analytical learning objectives and actionable analytic projects
- Ability to communicate and establish good relations with multi-disciplinary teams
- Proficiency with LangChain, LlamaIndex, AutoGen, CrewAI, LangGraph, or similar frameworks
- Proficiency with Python, including pandas, scikit-learn
- Experience in Spark or Pyspark
Minimum Requirements:
- Equivalent work experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field, such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, or Operations Research required.
- 5+ years of experience in statistical modeling and quantitative analysis in industry or full-time academic research
Preferred Qualifications:
- Equivalent work experience or an Advanced Degree (MS or PhD) in Statistics, Mathematics or Quantitative Marketing with a focus on machine learning is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing Data Scientists
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Retail electricity or gas experience
- Smart Home device or monitoring experience
- Comfortable working in Linux
- Experience with Git
- Experience with AWS SageMaker
- Experience with Docker containers
- Strong data background including knowledge of 3NF, star schema, and NoSQL database designs
- Experience with digital personalization, next best action, or decisioning engines
- Ability to learn and apply new quantitative techniques quickly and appropriately
- Ability to interpret and communicate complex analytics results
- Ability to identify practical business implications
- Good communication skills
- Keen attention to detail
- Think critically about analyses to ensure the conclusions make sense within the business context
Physical Requirements:
- The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
- Occasional overtime work may be required.
