Role Overview

The Director of Communications, Consumer – Home Energy will lead integrated communications for NRG’s Consumer business, which includes Home Energy and related retail offerings. This role is responsible for developing and executing strategic communications plans that engage employees and customers, strengthen brand reputation, and support business objectives. The Director will oversee a team of four with a focus on internal communications for the Consumer organization, managing external messaging, advising stakeholders on media strategy, including crisis communications, public engagement, and executive-level communications. The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership as well as acting as a company spokesperson when needed.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning
    • Develop and implement communications strategies aligned with Consumer business goals.
    • Partner with leadership to shape messaging for major initiatives, organizational changes, and growth priorities.
    • Collaborate with Marketing, Product Development, Sponsorship and Philanthropy teams to develop successful PR campaigns and events.
  • Internal Communications
    • Lead employee engagement efforts through clear, timely, and compelling communications.
    • Oversee content for intranet, newsletters, and leadership updates.
  • External Communications
    • Manage proactive and reactive media relations for Consumer initiatives, including crisis communications and media referred consumer complaints
    • Direct work of outside PR agencies
    • Develop press materials including press releases and talking points and social media posts.
    • Support Regulatory and Government Affairs teams with proactive and reactive communications on a variety of issues.
    • Anticipate/recognize potential issues and advise appropriate courses of action
  • Leadership Support
    • Advise Consumer leadership on communications best practices and collaborate on narrative development.
    • Prepare executives for town halls, media interviews, and speaking engagements.
    • Identify, analyze and recommend speaking opportunities for company executives
  • Measurement & Reporting
    • Establish goals and objectives for Home Energy communications group.
    • Track and report on communications effectiveness and engagement metrics.
    • Develop and track budget performance
    • Review and manage work of external agencies

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, with significant experience in consumer-focused businesses.
  • Proven ability to lead strategic communications and manage complex projects.
  • Experience managing a high performing team located in different regions of the country
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills, including writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
