Directs and plans plant mechanical & electrical work and occasionally mobile maintenance and outside contractor activities.  The position requires the development of fully planned work packages including duration, engineered drawings, vendor parts lists, stock materials listings, owner’s manuals and coordination of necessary resources.


Responsible for leading the development, implementation, and administration of the maintenance strategy to the objectives identified in the Station Business Plan.  The successful candidate will support and satisfy station operations department priorities as identified during weekly planning meetings.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Improve the overall effectiveness of the station safety program by providing leadership setting example and enforcement of policies, including disciplinary actions.   Support the implementation of the NRG Energy Safety procedures and policies. Fully support the company’s environmental policies.


  • Maintaining the station units “on-line and profitable” is the primary maintenance accountability.  The objective is to support the station operation activities.  This requires making decisions, updating and formulating maintenance strategies on a continuous basis.


  • Provide overall direction and support of plant, Mobile Maintenance, and contractor maintenance work activities to ensure timely and satisfactory job completion within budget and schedule limitations (this includes routine, forced, and scheduled work activities).


  • Provide leadership and direction to the implementation of the Work Management System (SAP) as the enabler to the maintenance process.


  • Provide leadership in accordance with the Company’s Vision and Core Values. Responsible for ensuring competence levels of all direct reports by developing a training plan with the maintenance manager to correct deficiencies. Consistently applies personnel policies and procedures of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Developing and drafting written maintenance plans for weekly and outage maintenance scheduling.
  • Determining and arranging for resources such as supplies, materials, parts and special tools or equipment required to perform maintenance inspections and/or work. Interpreting technical manuals, sketches, prints, instructions, manufacturer’s data and equipment history records in developing plans.
  • Determining priority, cost, manpower and time estimates, re-evaluating estimates to reflect changing job requirements and preparing job sequence requirements for major plant projects and for specific maintenance work.
  • Accumulating and analyzing data on actual versus estimated time, equipment, and manpower requirements.
  • Establishing and validating estimates for recurring maintenance work using past history, supervisory, planner, and craftsman knowledge. Conferring, as needed with representatives of equipment manufacturers on matters concerning the servicing, assembly, or maintenance of equipment. 
  • Recommending improved practices, methods and procedures to increase efficiency, quality, and reduce equipment downtime.
  • Initiating work orders for major scheduled or forced outages and participating in developing weekly plans.  
  • Coordinating maintenance planning activities and reviewing work orders with the appropriate supervisors and other elements to assure mutual agreement with understanding, arranging for critical equipment isolation with production, maintaining liaison among production, maintenance and engineering to coordinate plant maintenance planning activities.
  • Informing and instructing others in the application of work planning practice. 
  • Coordinate and oversee collateral duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Assist field coordination between contractors, consultants, and material suppliers on assigned projects.
  • Communicate and lead in accordance with company vision and core values.
  • Support station safety, maintenance performance, root cause analysis, condition based monitoring, proactive maintenance initiatives.
  • Occasional support of station forced outages and maintenance outages.  This may at times involve working night shift hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Development of engineered work packages.  Maintain historical database / reduction of maintenance backlog and equipment history in CMMS.  Weekly and monthly report outs as required.



  •  High School diploma or GED
  •  8 years experience in Electrical Generation experience in any of the following:  rotating machinery, operation of power plants,  dispatch generation, repairs of power plant equipment, marine propulsion power plant.
  • Excellent working knowledge of plant steam, mechanical, electrical systems and their  appropriate integration for efficient and effective production



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or related discipline from an accredited college or university
  • 4 years of experience leading, supervising, or managing employees in power generation.

Working Conditions:

•     Normal office environment and power plant environment.

•     Requires operation of a motor vehicle and a valid driver’s license in the state of residency.

•     Work overtime and non-standard working hours as required.

•     Requires occasional travel outside service area.

  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat,   appropriate footwear, earplugs, etc.)
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Requires operation of a personal computer and knowledge of Microsoft Work Office Suite.
