Job Summary:

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for handling routine maintenance and repairs on Plant facilities and equipment.  The Maintenance Mechanic performs tasks in accordance with the Plant Maintenance Program, and associated maintenance and repair procedures.

 

Essential Duties:


•    Participate in the Plant's preventive maintenance program, by performing routine maintenance duties, including the collection of trending information for the Maintenance Manager.

•    Keep track of spare parts as they are used; and complete a usage report, in order to replace items as necessary.  Assist in physical inventories.

•    Participate in the administrative maintenance of Plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.

•    Set up and operate machine shop tools in the performance of all machine work, to close tolerances.  Align and balance rotating equipment.

•    Inspect and repair all turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and similar equipment.

•    Assemble and repair tubing, piping, valves, and fittings subjected to both high and low temperature, or high and low pressure; or where certified welding is required.

•    Assemble, disassemble, repair, and adjust all types of electrical and mechanical equipment

•    Create, update, and maintain accurate plant records; utilize SAP and plant systems to support maintenance, inventory, and operational activities.

•    Support training activities, procedure development, contractor oversight, and continuous improvement initiatives.

•    Perform other assigned shifts, team, or independent duties, including housekeeping, safety program activities, and general facility upkeep.

 

Scope of Responsibility

The Maintenance Mechanic operates from established and well-known procedures, under minimum supervision, performing duties independently with only general direction given.  Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.  The Maintenance Mechanic encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.

At all times, the Maintenance Mechanic must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental permits.  The Maintenance Mechanic must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow Plant employees, relative to the condition of Plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for Plant


Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a power plant environment, both indoors and outdoors, in all temperatures and weather conditions. Tasks may involve exposure to high noise levels, energized electrical equipment, rotating machinery, confined spaces, and elevated work areas. Employees must climb ladders and stairways and work from platforms, aerial devices, or at heights of 5 feet or greater, including elevations exceeding 250 feet.

 

Minimum Requirements:

•    High School diploma or GED and 2 years’ related power plant experience 
•    OR
•    Associate’s degree in Instrumentation or related degree and 0 years’ related power plant experience
•    Valid State Driver’s License
•    Successful candidates must receive a rating of Recommended on the NRG pre-employment assessment test. 
•    The position is a DOT PHMSA covered position and requires the successful candidate to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and drug and alcohol testing background check, and once placed will be a participant in the NRG DOT Program.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired during four years of High School education.  Four years of experience as a power plant mechanic, millwright, or equivalent required.  Must have excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.  Must successfully complete a Maintenance Mechanics test.

Experience in turbines, pumps, HVAC, welding, or machining is highly desirable.

Must have excellent organizational skills.

•    Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and decision‑making skills, with the ability to work independently in time‑sensitive or high‑pressure situations
•    Knowledge of plant safety systems and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout and emergency response
•    Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
•    Ability to learn and apply complex mechanical systems with minimal supervision
•    Capability to multitask, perform basic calculations, and adapt to changing operational priorities

 

 

Physical Requirements (Demand and Frequency):

•    Ability to work rotating or irregular shifts and respond to emergency callouts 24/7
•    Ability to perform physically demanding work, including walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, twisting, climbing, pushing, pulling, and using hand tools
•    Ability to lift, carry, and position tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, including work in awkward positions
•    Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, safety glasses, goggles, and steel‑toed footwear
•    Ability to discern colors and work around hazardous and non‑hazardous materials
•    Ability to respond appropriately in stressful or emergency situations requiring immediate action
