Summer Internship Program

Our 16-week program is designed to increase future employment potential for prospects while providing a valuable resource to the business. This Summer Internship will appeal to proactive and self-motivated college juniors/seniors with a genuine desire to learn about the energy business and industry. During the internship, candidates will work on real projects and have real responsibilities. NRG aims to help candidates build strengths and gain skills that can be transferred to any workplace and help them stand out from the crowd.

Ideal Candidate

This Intern role within the organization is based in Calgary, AB. NRG is looking for self-driven, high-caliber individuals who can grasp complex business and technical issues and harness information and relationships to deliver solutions. In return, NRG will provide the support, guidance, and opportunities to help our ideal candidate be successful. Through this program, NRG seeks to help candidates make significant impact, inspire people, and provide exceptional customer service.

The Growth Strategy Data Analyst Intern will support strategic growth initiatives for NRG’s deregulated business in Canada through data analysis and business insights. As part of the Market and Segment Strategy team, the intern will assist in evaluating new growth markets, customer segments, and channels, while helping identify opportunities to improve profitability and the customer experience.

This is a hands-on role designed to provide real-world exposure to analytics-driven decision-making in a fast-paced growth environment. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with data, curious about business strategy, and eager to strengthen their ability to translate analysis into clear, actionable insights.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Support team members in analyzing business and market data (e.g., customer, billing, marketing, sales, product, and financial data) to identify trends and potential growth opportunities.

• Assist with the creation and maintenance of dashboards, reports, and analytical models to track KPIs and strategic initiatives.

• Help support customer segmentation and market analysis efforts for Residential and Small Business customers.

• Provide analytical support for growth initiatives related to product, pricing, and marketing, under the guidance of experienced analysts.

• Assist in preparing presentation materials and summaries of insights for internal stakeholders and leadership.

• Conduct research on market trends and competitive activity to support strategic and planning discussions.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to learn how data and insights are shared, aligned, and used to inform decision-making.

Education

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Economics, Business, Mathematics/Statistics, or a related field.
• Completion of at least second year of study by the start of the internship.

Minimum Requirements:

• Strong analytical aptitude with a demonstrated interest in data analysis, business intelligence, and strategy.

• Working knowledge of Excel; coursework or exposure to SQL, Python, and/or data visualization or ETL tools (e.g., Power BI) is considered an asset.

• Ability to work with large data sets to identify patterns, summarize findings, and communicate insights clearly.

• Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain analysis to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities/Position requires employee to work using a laptop/computer screen.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid; 4 days in office per week (Calgary)
  • Some travel <10%
