Job Summary:
Provide mechanical maintenance support to maintain equipment in an electrical generating power plant; may perform Lead Mechanic duties during absence of a Lead Mechanic.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plant equipment, including boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, valves, condensers, and heat exchangers.
- Perform preventive, corrective, and diagnostic maintenance on stationary and rotating equipment in accordance with best practices.
- Repair or replace mechanical components such as bearings, seals, packing, sleeves, and seats.
- Use precision measuring devices (e.g., micrometers) to set clearances and tolerances using blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
- Operate machine shop equipment such as drill presses, lathes, and boring mills.
- Design and fabricate special tools and equipment to support maintenance activities.
- Perform welding, cutting, brazing, and fabrication using gas, arc, and oxy-acetylene equipment.
- Perform plumbing and pipefitting tasks.
- Remove and install non-asbestos insulation materials on plant equipment.
- Set up rigging and safely remove or install equipment and components.
- Monitor equipment condition through observation (e.g., oil pressure, noise, vibration) and collect routine vibration data.
- Identify required materials and parts, order as needed, and document work completed for equipment history and maintenance records.
- Use SAP (CMMS) to document work, manage parts, and support maintenance activities.
- Review and assist in developing preventive maintenance procedures and spare parts lists.
- Communicate effectively with plant personnel and coordinate work with contractors and vendors, as assigned.
- Provide guidance and skill development support to apprentice mechanics and other employees.
- Assist Operations and other maintenance groups (Electrical, I&C) as needed.
- Follow all safety, environmental, and lockout/tagout procedures; identify hazards and work safely to protect self, coworkers, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
- Work rotating or irregular shifts and respond to emergency callouts 24/7.
- Work indoors and outdoors in all weather and temperature conditions in a power plant environment.
- Work around rotating machinery, energized electrical equipment, high noise areas, hazardous and non-hazardous materials, confined spaces, and elevated platforms.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots, respirators, safety glasses, goggles, and other protective gear.
- Ability to work in high-stress situations requiring quick response to abnormal or hazardous conditions.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics and grammar.
- 0- 3 years’ experience in mechanical maintenance experience in the repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of related power plant or machine shop equipment including inspection and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, fabricating and diagnostics OR 3 years mechanical maintenance experience in a similar industrial environment.
- The position is a DOT PHMSA covered position and requires the successful candidate to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and drug and alcohol testing background check, and once placed will be a participant in the NRG DOT Program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates degree or equivalent apprenticeship.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to safely use hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Knowledge of rotating equipment and industrial maintenance practices.
- Ability to operate welding and cutting equipment and qualify as a code welder with training.
- Ability to operate machine shop equipment and material-handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, mobile cranes).
- Ability to read and follow technical manuals, drawings, procedures, and verbal instructions.
- Ability to perform basic math, geometry, and measurement calculations.
- Ability to use a personal computer and maintenance software systems.
- Ability to follow lockout/tagout procedures.
Physical Requirements (Demand and Frequency):
- Frequent walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders and stairways, and working at heights (from platforms, scaffolds, and aerial devices).
- Ability to lift, carry, and position tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in awkward positions.
- Ability to work with arms above and below shoulder height and extended from the body.
- Ability to push, pull, stoop, bend, twist, and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the workday.
- Ability to hear alarms and verbal signals, visually identify colors, and safely operate vehicles and equipment.
Please Note: Salary offered will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s education and/or experience and consistent with the job location’s market pay rate.
