Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, the incumbent will provide direction to plant operating personnel in the production of electricity and to ensure that department and plant goals are achieved in the safest, most reliable and cost effective manner while maintaining the highest environmental standards.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for plant safety program activities and ensure that proper safety procedures are followed
  • Coordinate with Commercial Operations the production of electrical power including real-time loading, unit start­ ups and shutdowns to meet competitive energy market (ISO) demands.
  • Direct in-house maintenance employees as well as maintenance contractors.
  • Assist in the development, administration, and implementation of a comprehensive training program that will ensure the operators are qualified and competent to perform the functions of their job duties.
  • Responsible for the performance management and development of assigned personnel, including employee evaluation and coaching, training, labor relations and administering the labor contract.
  • Assume system ownership of various plant systems for which he or she will have responsibilities for developing or updating operating procedures, providing operational and performance evaluations, and developing or providing department input in the development of preventative and predictive work practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate plant production output, efficiency and related variables including the overall effectiveness of operating practices and procedures and ensure that the appropriate action is taken in response to plant conditions or contingencies.
  • Write maintenance work orders, give direction in maintenance work priorities as necessary and be aware of maintenance work and equipment faults in the plant to ensure that they do not affect the reliable operation of the plant.
  • Coordinate Operations Department or Plant projects.
  • Convey department and station expectations to crew members. Ensure standards are being met through coaching and performance accountability.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Five (5) years of experience in power plant operations 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Seven (7) years of experience in power plant operations
  • Previous Gas / Oil-fired generating station operations experience
  • Proven ability to learn new skills and concepts quickly
  • Proven ability to take on new challenges and be flexible to take on work outside of the immediate scope of responsibility

 

 Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be self-motivated and possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practical application of fossil station operations.
  • Must possess the ability to determine facts, analyze information, and make decisions accordingly with respect to generating station operations.
  • Must have technical expertise in plant systems and cycles with proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels and all departments of the power plant organization.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and possess the working knowledge of personal computers and applications.
  • Should have working knowledge of relevant codes, environmental regulations and applicable OSHA and NRG safety rules and regulations.
  • The ideal candidate will have knowledge of computers and have experience writing operating procedures.
