Job Summary: 

 NRG’s Power Plants are recruiting highly motivated college students to join NRG Energy as an engineering intern for the summer of 2020. This position is at the WA Parish Generating Station. Interns are provided opportunities to develop their technical and professional skills, explore career options, while fulfilling specific business needs working with our WA Parish Engineering staff.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist plant engineering staff in performing inspections on mechanical and electrical equipment and assist in troubleshooting activities.
  • Assist plant engineering staff in long range planning for projects designed to improve plant efficiencies or maintain equipment performance.
  • Assist plant engineering staff in performing root cause failure investigations on mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Collect and trend plant operating data, analyze and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Perform investigations or research on specific plant issues.  
  • Prepare report and present findings and recommendations to plant management.
  • Complete short term project assignments with engineering and plant team.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Open office and power plant environment.
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals.
  • Use of PPE (Personnel Protective Equipment), which may include safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, protective footwear, ear plugs, safety harness, respirator.
  • Some overtime required as special projects arise.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in good standing at an accredited college or university. 
  • At minimum, must be classified as a college sophomore with strong academic standing. 
  • Have completed math/science/engineering college courses applicable towards an engineering degree.
  • Declared major in an engineering field.  
  • Valid driver’s license in United States.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is strongly preferred.
  • GPA 3.0+ preferred.
  • Previous co-op / intern experience preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong computer and analytical skills
  • Good project management skills
  • Demonstrates problem solving and decision making
  • Exhibits desire to learn in a new environment

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a plant environment, which may include climbing ladders, stairs, high elevations, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and operating equipment.
  • May work on elevations in excess of 250 feet or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater.
  • Dress attire is casual (blue jeans and a shirt with a collar).
  • Position typically requires working outdoors approximately 50% of the time.
