Job Summary:  

Working under general supervision install, inspect, maintain, and repair electrical equipment typically found at a power plant; diagnose malfunctions; determine and take corrective action to restore electrical or electronic equipment or systems to service.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operate and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic and digital     instruments, 
  • Knowledge of relay and control system repairs and maintenance. Understand how voltage, current, resistance and power work together. 
  • Ability to inspect and test instruments and systems to diagnose and correct issues
  • Experience in the repair and adjustment of  system components including sensors, transmitters and programmable logic controllers
  • Ability and experience in  calibrating components and instruments
  • Perform electrical and electronic maintenance and installation work as required
  • Ability to interpret and use in-house and manufacturer’s electrical, mechanical and electronic schematics and prints.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
  • Experience in troubleshooting electrical and electronic problems and effect repairs as required.
  • Ability to conduct high voltage testing.
  • Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

Working Conditions:

  • Normal power plant environment and/or out of doors work environment.  Includes working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations
  • Regular extended and non-standard hours during critical issue resolution and to achieve project milestones
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, fall protection etc.)
  • Requires working around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals
  • Position is subject to working rotating shifts

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Successful applicant must receive a rating of “recommended” on the NRG Pre-Employment Skills Assessment test.
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Associates Degree in Electrical Technology


  • 5 or more years of experience working as an electrical technician doing troubleshooting and calibrating instruments and control systems and 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Power Plant experience    
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•    PC-based analytical software proficiency


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work at heights, near high voltage electricity and live steam, in hot and cold environments. 
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, repair, or collect data on plant equipment
  • Requires the ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Valid Driver's license
