GenOn Energy, Inc., a wholesale generator, owns and operates  power generation facilities across the United States, primarily in the Northeast and California. We generate electricity using natural gas, coal, and oil resources. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Under general directive supervision, the Power Plant Operator performs duties associated with the monitoring and operation of power plant equipment inclusive of all auxiliary pumps, fans, motors, turbines, satellites, switching etc. The Power Plant Operator performs preventive maintenance tasks and minor repairs as required during the shift. Duties include but are not limited to:


  • Performs all assignments safely, participates in creating a safe work environment within the work place by participating in safety training and supporting continuous improvement.
  • Understand and perform water and chemistry treatments, performs basic water testing and zero set calibrations on portable test equipment for the purpose of verifying operating plant processes, sets up and collects water samples/ levels, oil samples and associated data as required.
  • Requests, executes, develops, checks and utilizes LOTOs and LOTO program as qualified.
  • Assist in routine test activities such as condenser checks, fan vibrations and performance testing.
  • Operates, checks and troubleshoots all auxiliary power plant equipment, associated with the outside duties of the boiler, turbine, scrubber, SCR and generator systems.
  • Assist the Control Room Operators with daily plant operating duties, station start-ups/ shutdowns etc.
  • Performs switching and breaker change out to the level qualified.
  • Perform and complete shift equipment walkdown checks, tests and logs.
  • Ensure environmental compliance of all systems associated with the operations of the power plant and satellite auxiliary systems.
  • Provides training to other employees who are in the Knowledge and Skill Based Power Plant Worker and Power Plant Operator curriculums.
  • Assist in the investigation of equipment performance or failures.
  • Occasionally performs other work as assigned for which the individual is qualified.


Education:  High School Diploma or GED Equivalent


Other Minimal Requirements:

  • Must Complete the Power Plant Worker Knowledge Based Curriculum.
  • Must receive a rating of “recommended” on the NRG Pre-Employment Skills Assessment test
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license to operator applicable company vehicles
  • Must maintain all regulator required licenses as applicable at Company’s expense.


Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
  • Requires regular climbing of ladders, steep catwalks, and conveyor structures.


Working Conditions

  • Normal power plant environment and/or out of doors work environment.  (Including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations).
  • Work overtime and non-standard working hours as required.
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.).
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals.
