Responsibilities:

 

The position serves as the senior technical leader for NRG’s Renewable Operations and Maintenance group.  The Sr Manager of Engineering and Technical Services will provide senior level engineering, project management, and technical leadership to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of NRG Renewable assets.  Must possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of power generation processes and operation and maintenance techniques; a thorough understanding of and demonstrated ability in leadership, coaching, and management techniques; strong knowledge of environmental and safety rules and regulations; strong knowledge and demonstrated skills in contract negotiation, contract administration and project management; strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written and presentation); strong computer skills and must be highly experienced in MS Office applications and Lotus Notes; strong skills and demonstrated experience in budgeting and cost control; ability to interface effectively with all levels of employees, officers and counsel.

 

The successful applicant will possess a broad range of knowledge, skills, and experience encompassing typical power generation and transmission equipment such as; turbines, generators, inverters, balance of plant, switchgear, transformers, governors, plant control systems, relays, SCADA, and communications.  This position plays an integral role in long-range planning, budget development, and has a strong ability to directly affect change.  This senior role is accompanied by an appropriate high level of responsibility and accountability.

 

  • Proactively engages in O&M activities at NRG’s facilities, making process improvement recommendations and leading initiatives to maximize reliability while decreasing O&M cost.
  • Manage and maintain wind and solar condition assessment program to ensure the long-term viability of NRG renewable facilities.
  • Develop future-oriented reliability initiatives aimed at increasing fleet availability and reducing O&M costs.
  • Manage technical analysis of equipment RCAs, fault analysis, Predictive Maintenance and make changes to programs based upon those results.
  • Understand the technical needs of the renewable fleet and manage resources (contractors and employees) to meet current and predicted needs.
  • Ensure that NERC standards are met on a fleet-wide basis providing technical support to plant managers.
  • Oversee the warranty claims program and ensure that inspections, claims, and warranty negotiations are completed.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced personnel.
  • Responsible for performing operational assessments and providing recommendations for actions necessary to comply with company policies, regulatory requirements and industry best practices
  • Responsible for setting up and maintaining successful communication networks with employees, partners, customers, OEMs, etc.
  • Work with IT to manage IT projects including the implementation of upgrades to communications systems, servers and other IT infrastructure.
  • Provide field technical support of Renewable plant equipment including; SCADA, IT, Relays,

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Energy Sciences, Engineering, or related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in Energy Sciences, Engineering, or related field is preferred.
  • At least 7 years of progressive experience in wind operations and maintenance.
  • At least 4 years of experience in technical wind operations and maintenance (engineering function).
  • Experience with multiple turbine manufacturers is preferred.
  • Experience performing RCAs solar and wind equipment.
  • Experience managing or administering warranty inspections, claims, and negotiations in regards to wind energy.
  • Experience or management of individuals with vibration analysis, high voltage, and SCADA experience is preferred.
  • Must possess a high level of motivation and demonstrated aptitude in solving problems involving both technical and market analysis, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in a fast paced environment and ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and presentations appropriate for various organizational levels as well as for the board; ability to effectively perform within a matrix organizational environment.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Able to travel extensively throughout the US and to other NRG locations (20% – 40%).
  • Position is required to be located in Scottsdale, AZ.
  • Normal office environment and/or plant environment, including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas.
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Occasionally requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.)
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals
  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
  • Work overtime and non-standard working hours as required.
