Senior Performance Engineer

 

NRG invites applications from senior candidates with solar energy modeling and capacity testing experience to join NRG’s Performance Engineering team. Successful candidates will be familiar with the solar industry, proficient with PVsyst, capacity testing, will understand common EPC contractor and Independent Engineer modeling approaches, as well as common modeling pitfalls. NRG’s typical projects include utility-scale solar, DG solar (commercial rooftop, carport, and ground mount), as well as hybrid storage-PV and utility-scale wind projects.  The senior performance engineer will work closely with NRG’s internal departments including: origination, development, engineering, construction, project finance, and O&M, as well as with 3rd parties such as EPC contractors and Independent Engineers.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide specialist performance modeling support to Development and Development Engineering teams for solar project development opportunities, technology evaluations, and project acquisition due diligence.
  • Select data inputs and evaluate solar energy input and power output expectations using performance modeling software
  • Analyze data and simulation results, identify patterns and provide insights and generate high quality reports to support optimization of plant design, installed generating capacity, energy output, capital cost, financial models, etc.
  • Support conceptual engineering and energy simulation for solar power projects including roof top, shade structure, BIPV and ground mounted systems.
  • Coordinate with NRG project team on energy resource predictions and production simulations
  • Provide technical review and power output expectations for a variety of module and inverter technologies to support procurement and engineering with selection.
  • Evaluate system generation performance and capacity testing methodologies for substantial completion of solar power projects.
  • Support due diligence reviews of project acquisition opportunities to insure project technical viability and support development of pro forma costs inputs.
  • Interface with EPC contractors/developers and Independent Engineers to align performance model and capacity testing methodologies and results.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Minimum BS degree in engineering, meteorology, atmospheric physics or closely related subject.  Master’s degree with academic project experience related to solar energy or photovoltaic technology preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the solar industry is required, preferably in energy modeling, performance testing, or related engineering roles.
  • Previous renewable energy modeling experience is essential, preferably of terrestrial photovoltaic systems.
  • Substantial experience with commercial solar modeling programs especially PVSYST, Helioscope, SAM, PVWatts is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency with engineering, mathematical/statistical software and/or programing languages (e.g. MATLAB,  Excel VBA)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Project, Word and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with computer graphics (SketchUp, AutoCAD or similar) for shading analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to projects sites (typically 20%) and when necessary to work overtime on short notice.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Flexibility to work outside of standard working hours, as needed.
  • Ability to lift 50-pound boxes to a height of 3-4 feet.
  • Normal office environment with frequent use of a computer or telephone in a seated position.
