Summary:   The General Manager is responsible for the Energy Center business units located in Phoenix, San Diego and San Francisco and other local systems that may be acquired and is responsible for the following:


  • Compliance with all NRG, industry and OSHA safety practices and all government environmental regulations.
  • Profitable and safe operations and growth of all business units.
  • Formulation of direct business unit marketing strategies with private, public, governmental and regulatory bodies.
  • Management of business operations and plant operations including all sales, marketing, customer relations, operations, as well as maintenance, staffing, training, testing and sourcing.
  • Development of business plans focused on growth through aggressive sales objectives, future acquisitions, joint ventures and other strategic alliances.
  • Development of plans and strategies for district energy system supply and distribution, cogeneration, steam, chilled water and other energy related services.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:


General Management:

Provide close management of key Company functions, policies and strategies including, but not limited to:

  • Marketing Strategies - Develop and implement business unit marketing strategies and programs necessary to maintain and expand the customer base. Develop and implement programs to promote more efficient use of thermal energy by customers. Develop and coordinate steam and cooling systems supply and distribution plans and strategies to determine system demand/energy requirements compatible with reliability objectives and capital expenditure limitations.
  • Formulate and direct business units marketing policies with public, governmental and regulatory bodies.
  • Sales Strategies - Expand steam and chilled water programs to include a wider range of institutional and industrial customers.
    • Function as an “industry and community leader” in customer service and relationships.
    • Responsible for business development and customer relations.
    • Provide custom energy solutions for current and future customers.
    • Responsible for local interaction with customers and community.
    • Provide strategic consulting to existing and potential customers concerning current and future steam and chilled water service needs.
    • Develop customer retention programs.
  • Review and provide supervision and input for financial statements to determine progress and status.
    • Improve return on assets for the plant.
    • Build business with plant’s existing assets.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance with all Federal, State and local regulations and associated permits.  This includes all applicable environmental, health and safety regulations.
  • Responsible for the implementation, management, updating and maintaining of all plant procedures, site policies, training programs, safety programs and work practices.
  • Authorize and execute contracts and approve transactions in accordance with Company policy.  Responsible for customer contracts, billing services, credit and collections.
  • Fuel Planning & Procurement:  Oversee fuel planning, fuel procurement, compilation of fuel usage statistics and analysis, and participates in fuel-related regulatory proceedings. 
  • Community Relations:  Establish and maintain direct, positive and uniform communications with the media, civic and community groups, customers, employees and government institutions to secure the Company’s reputation as a utility, which accepts leadership role in the community.
  • Employee Relations:  Oversee development and implementation of personnel management programs including job definition, recruiting, hiring, performance evaluation, salary review, and employee benefits.
  • Plan and develop strategies for district heating system supply and distribution, cogeneration, steam and chilled water supply.

    Plant Management:

  • Streamline administration of critical business functions including personnel management, budgeting, contract management, training, regulatory compliance and purchasing.
  • Direct responsibility for developing and managing site O&M budget.
  • Monitor plant performance; investigate and correct any abnormal conditions
  • Propose and implement equipment modifications and plant improvements.
  • Implement plant improvements and equipment upgrades with a focus on up-front capital investment through performance contracting.
  • Maintain high system reliability and performance.
  • Achieve high unit performance and unit production cost goals.
  • Monitor, evaluate and manage plant for compliance with contractual requirements.


    Measurements of Performance:

  • Achieving pre-tax profit and cash flow objectives.
  • Building existing and new customer base.
  • Maximize return on equity.
  • Build positive image within the community among customers, politicians, developers and plant managers.
  • Maximize current plant utilization factor.
  • Add profitable additional energy-related business units
  • Maintaining regulatory compliance with all Federal, State and local regulations for plant safety standards and plants compliance with the NRG safety plan.



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.  Degree in the College of Business or Engineering or closely related technical field is preferred. An MBA is a plus.
  • 5- year minimum management experience.
  • 5-year minimum of technical sales experience.
  • Extensive managerial and professional experience related to energy systems, district heating and cooling systems, technology and operations preferred.
  • Detailed technical understanding, and managerial experience related to thermal systems including startup, operations and maintenance.
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate, present and influence key stakeholders at all levels of an organization, including executive and C-level

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.


Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment.
  • Some overnight travel.
  • Some overtime required as special circumstances and projects arise.
  • Must be capable of visiting customers and others at their places of business.
