Job Responsibilities

The Lead Operator ensures that the Plant operates safely and efficiently. This responsibility is carried out not only by the Lead Operator directly, but also through his supervision of Operators and others who perform work in the Plant.

 

Reporting Responsibilities

The Lead Operator reports to the Plant Manager.

 

Job Parameters

The Lead Operators works the daylight shift (7 AM – 3 PM on weekdays) and overtime as required by the demands of the job. He is paid according to the current Union (International Union of Operating Engineers Affiliated with AFL-CIO Local No. 95-95A) contract.

 

Job Duties

  • Direct Operators in the safe and efficient operation of the Plant, with the goal of 100% customer supply reliability and boiler make-up of less than 20%
  • Mentor Operators to improve their knowledge, skill and effectiveness
  • Assign job duties to Operators
  • Cover for Operators as needed
  • Lead by example to maintain all areas of the Plant in a neat, clean and organized manner
  • Maintain and update Plant Operating Procedures
  • Ensure that the NRG Safety program is adhered to during all work performed by plant personnel and contractors
  • Participate in NRG’s Safety program, including conducting routine inspections, walk-downs, training and observations; participating in incident investigations; serving on the safety committee; and being responsible for Hazard Communications
  • Participate in NRG’s Environmental program, including conducting walk-downs, inspections, training, and communications
  • Maintain and improve the Plant’s and RO’s water treatment program, including monitoring, adjusting, documenting, and evaluating system parameters; ordering chemicals; and scheduling suppliers’ services
  • Ensure that the Plant complies with ACHD’s water and air Title V Permit requirements, including sampling, registering, testing, scheduling, and filing documents
  • Work with customers to optimize chilled water efficiency and assist with condensate sampling

 

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years industrial plant operations, maintenance and/or equivalent technical supervisory and project management experience.
  • Experience with commercial and industrial heating, cooling, pumping and District Energy systems preferred
  • Experienced in mentoring, training and motivating employees at all levels
  • Thorough understanding of the Plant’s operating systems, equipment, piping layouts and diagrams, and technical instructions
  • Familiar with ABB, Siemens, and Emerson control systems
  • Certifications: Stationary Engineer and Universal Refrigeration licenses.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to lead and direct O&M staff.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word and Outlook).  SAP experience preferred.
