Job Summary

The Maintenance Specialist position is intended for an individual with extensive experience and advanced subject matter knowledge in Power Plant maintenance and planning of maintenance activities. This knowledge can be gained through experience or a combination of college/technical training and experience.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Promote safety by assuring that all safety rules and regulations are followed including the coordination and supervision of equipment isolation and tagging procedures
  • Develop and draft written maintenance plans for the plant including weekly and outage maintenance scheduling while helping establish plant maintenance priorities in accordance with Plant Operations’ needs.
  • Determine and arrange necessary resources, e.g. supplies, materials, parts, and special tools or equipment required to perform maintenance inspections and/or work. Interpret technical manuals, sketches, prints, instructions, manufacturer’s data and equipment history records while incorporating the applicable information in developing maintenance plans.
  • Determine, cost, manpower and time-estimates, re-evaluate estimates to reflect changing job requirements and prepare job sequence requirements for major plant projects and for specific maintenance work.
  • Accumulate and analyze data on actual versus estimated time, equipment, and manpower requirements.
  • Establish and validate estimates for recurring maintenance work using past history, Supervisor, Planner, and Craftsperson knowledge. Confer, as needed with representatives of equipment manufacturers on matters concerning the servicing, assembly, or maintenance of equipment.
  • Recommend improved practices, methods, and procedures, to increase efficiency and quality while reducing equipment downtime.
  • Initiate work orders for major scheduled or forced outages and participate in developing weekly plans.
  • Coordinate maintenance planning activities and review work orders with the appropriate supervisors and other elements to assure mutual agreement and understanding. Arrange for critical equipment isolation with operations to coordinate plant maintenance planning activities.
  • Inform and instruct others in the application of work planning practice.
  • Collateral duties and special projects as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
  • Assist field coordination between internal departments, contractors, consultants, and material suppliers on assigned projects.
  • Communicate and lead in accordance with company vision and core values
  • Support station safety; maintenance performance; root cause analysis; condition based monitoring; reliability-centered maintenance to include proactive maintenance initiatives.
  • Support the implementation of work and outage management policies and procedures.
  • Support of station forced outages and maintenance outages. This may at times involve working night shift hours and/or weekends.
  • Assist in the development of engineered work packages.
  • Maintain historical database/reduction of maintenance backlog and equipment history in SAP.
  • Communicate with Procurement and vendors to request/receive information and to expedite the approval of documents and the delivery of materials.
  • Be the champion for safety concerns and support station issues to ensure compliance with fleet initiatives.
  • Fill in for the Planner, Maintenance Supervisor, or Maintenance Manager when needed.


Working Conditions

  • Normal power plant environment and/or out of doors work environment. Includes working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle; Valid State Driver’s License
  • Regular extended and non-standard hours during critical issue resolution and to achieve project milestones
  • Occasional travel to Corporate locations and other company plants
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, fall protection etc.)
  • Requires working around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals
  • Requires operation of a personal computer


Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Two (2) years’ experience in operations or maintenance activities.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree in a related field
  • Five (5) years’ experience in operations or maintenance activities.


Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of Power Plant Work Management Systems
  • Must be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of SAP work Management Systems
  • Excellent communications skills including written, verbal, and motivational
  • Ability and willingness to lead and train co-workers to fully realize maximum team potential
  • Ability to coordinate numerous activities under stress with poise, safely and successfully
  • Possess an excellent working knowledge of operations and maintenance for efficient and effective production
  • Strong background in MS office suite applications especially Excel. / Awareness of project scheduling software such as MS Project and Primavera.
  • Ability to develop outage schedules and weekly maintenance schedules.
