Maintain and repair various types of electrical generation and steam producing Electrical equipment and their associated auxiliary components.

This position is at our Ivanpah Generating Station facility in Nipton, CA.


Essential Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and process meters, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
  • Work with transformers, generators, switchgear, breakers and other electrical components and systems.
  • Update prints and drawings to indicate the latest revisions or configuration modification.
  • Perform general cleaning and housekeeping duties.
  • Assist and instruct junior employees in work procedures and safe work practices.



Knowledge of:


  • Theory of electricity as related to installation and maintenance of electrical equipment.


  • Materials, methods, practices, and tools used in installation and maintenance of transformers, oil switches, regulators, motors, generators, switchboards, and associated equipment.


  • Safety rules and regulations and first aid procedures.


Ability to:


  • Apply electrical theory to practical applications as encountered in troubleshooting and maintaining power plant equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications and wiring diagrams.
  • Work safely on and around high voltage energized equipment.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Work in elevated positions such as towers and racks as necessary.
  • Obtain and maintain a state vehicle operator's license.


The knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job are of a level comparable with those normally acquired through courses taken in obtaining a high school education, additional technical courses, and considerable training and experience as a Helper and an Electrical Apprentice.


  • High school Diploma, GED, or equivalent math and English skills required
  • Journeyman Level training in Industrial Electrical work preferred. 


  • Five (5) years industrial experience in electronics installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Completion of a company's Apprentice Training Program including classroom and on-the-job training.

Additional Skills:

  • Good communicative skills with the ability to effectively work with a variety of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate diagnostic findings and propose (or sell) solutions to residential customers.
  • Ability to effectively use mobile computing devices to capture/record diagnostic results, create estimates and job specific proposals.
  • Ability to document job specific information, complete and close out work orders and receive and record customer payment when required.
  • Good practical skills.
  • Ability to follow technical drawings, building plans and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to work carefully, methodically and safely.
  • Willingness to work in all sorts of weather.
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces.

 Physical Requirements:

  • Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to on-call and emergency service requests.
  • Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment (e.g. forklift, plant vehicles, etc.) and maintain operating licenses and certifications. CA DL is required.
  • Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
  • Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 50 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.
  • Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
  • Ability to perform work from ladders, catwalks and supports at various heights up to 450 feet. 
  • Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required e.g. Safety-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc.
  • Have ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
  • Ability to discern assorted colors



Out-of-doors environment at generating plant work locations includes: 

  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 450 feet.
  • Work in all temperatures and climatic conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme. 
  • Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment. 
  • Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons. 
  • Steel toe footwear must be worn. 
  • Performance of duties may require response calls after normal work hours and working irregular shifts.

Plant Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift up to _50_ pounds.
  • Ability to squat or bend for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to wear a mask.
  • Ability to work in noisy environments.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to look at a computer screen for long hours.

  • Must be able to pass a company physical.
  • Normal office environment and/or out of doors work environment (Including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations).
  • Power plant environment. Work environment includes working out of doors, working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations.  Work in all temperatures and climate conditions.  Some temperatures can be extreme.
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle; valid driver's license is required.
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 450 feet.

Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirators and other protective equipment.
