Job Summary: 

 

  • Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, Fuel Yard Handlers (Auxiliary Operators) operate and monitor auxiliary equipment and systems that support the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound production of export steam and electricity.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Monitors systems and equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Communicates with the Shift Supervisor and Control Room Operator about equipment start and stop time, abnormal conditions and corrective actions, equipment checks and conditions found.
  • Operates system, equipment, and components during start-up, run, shutdown and standby mode in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Perform operational diagnostic and analytical functions on systems, equipment, and components.
  • Isolates and restores system, equipment, and components strictly adhering to the work scope and applicable procedures and practices.
  • Performs administrative functions in support of work unit such as timekeeping, materials support, cost monitoring, and scheduling and quality control/quality assurance. 
  • Uses plant computer systems to monitor work backlog and input work order data.
  • Performs data collection and maintain proper logs.
  • Adheres to all safety and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Performs emergency response activities as required.
  • Performs general housekeeping functions as necessary.

 

Working Conditions:

 

  • Power Plant Environment-Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions. Work around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, in confined places/vessels , on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.
  • May work alone in remote areas of the plant and/or in areas of limited lighting.
  • Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts, holidays, weekends, overtime and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
  • Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
  • Handle multiple tasks and meets stringent deadlines.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • High school diploma or GED Equivalent; knowledge of English, mathematics and grammar.
  • Two years of industrial experience or a 2 year technical degree.  
  • Successful candidates must receive a "recommended" rating on the NRG Pre-Employment Skills Assessment Test.

  • Ability to effectively communicate information to supervision and co-workers relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, both orally and in writing.
  • Provide suggestions for plant improvements. 
  • Perform duties in such a way as to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to interpret and apply instructions, specifications, blueprints, and procedures.
  • Ability to use various hand/power driven and hydraulic tools and machinery.
  • Ability to learn complex plant systems and communicate knowledge.
  • Ability to progress and advance through operation’s positions.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks or assignments at the same time.
  • Ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel.
  • Ability to monitor, comprehend, and record data available through the use of various instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures.
  • Ability to Tag Out/Lock Out equipment per NRG’s Tag Out/Lock Out procedure.
  • Ability to perform checks (e.g., PM’s) on equipment.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles and equipment (e.g. forklift, plant vehicle, etc.) and maintain operating licenses and certifications. WVDL is required.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and associated software.
  • Ability to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to perform flow, pressure and meter calculation.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, procedures and technical manuals.
  • Ability to record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters.
  • Ability to operate various computer systems to receive, analyze, and input data.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.
  • Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
  • Work at elevated heights including working on scaffolding.
  • Ability to ascend 10 stories of stairs unassisted (~125 ft. elevation)
  • Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
  • Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e.…steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc.
  • Ability to discern assorted colors.
