This position is governed by a local union contract.

 

Responsibilities:

The Control Operator position is intended for an individual with extensive experience and advanced subject matter knowledge in GE LM6000 and P&W combustion turbine aero derivative technology.  This knowledge can be gained through experience or a combination of a college/technical training and experience.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sound operation of plant equipment
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental permits and regulations on a continuous basis and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Make operating decisions based on the principle of safety and environmental over production, without supervision
  • Properly operate, combustion turbines and auxiliaries during normal and emergency operation
  • Start, monitor and stop combustion turbines when requested by ISONE without direct supervision
  • Understand and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel
  • The Control Operator will monitor the RIG while in the control room.
  • On off hours and weekends (single operator watch) the Control Operator will be responsible for site security. Duties to include monitoring the security cameras, and the gate. Communication with Guard for site access denial/approval.
  • The Control Operator will carry a cell phone with remote notification for unit start requests and information from ISO or Commercial Operations.
  • Request operational support when units are called to operate. The on duty Control Operator shall initiate the start first, and then make the call for extra person.
  • Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret operating data
  • Communicate information clearly, both orally and written
  • Communicate conditions of plant system and equipment to Plant Management and others as needed
  • Communicate unit status to Commercial Operations in a timely manner
  • Assist others as needed
  • Troubleshoot plant equipment, using logic and reasoning, to resolve operational problems
  • Understand and execute the equipment LOTO procedure
  • Operate various computer systems and printers to receive, analyze, comprehend and input data
  • Monitor and record data available through the use of various instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures
  • Implement Plant Emergency Procedures as needed
  • Assist maintenance personnel in performance of maintenance activities to include use of tools, equipment and company vehicles
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, off-loading fuel trucks and placing demineralizer in/out of service
  • Apply knowledge of power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision-making and work tasks
  • Be available to work on off hours and weekends
  • Take, record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation
  • Meet physical requirements of the job such as performing tasks while standing, walking, climbing (stairs and ladders) and squatting
  • Ability to operate company vehicles and equipment and maintain operating licenses
  • Makes rounds and takes readings on equipment when operating and in reserve mode
  • Inspects and cleans equipment routinely after operation
  • Maintain a sequential log of all important station operations and station events. Logbook and tagging computer entries will normally be of equipment start-ups, shutdowns, dispatch orders form ISO or Commercial Operations, fuel related documentation, equipment in or out of service, accidents, fires, outages, tagging and isolation of equipment, and other entries as required
  • At midnight each night the Control scan the daily log sheets, and save to appropriate file on computer. Control Operator will input generation and station service integrators reading on monthly spread sheet, in appropriate computer file.
  • Input unit status (events) into POWER GADS system on computer
  • Train on, and performs a second skill (cross training), which will be determined at a later date
  • Required to train and teach others as needed

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass the NRG Pre-Assessment testing with a score of recommended.
  • High School Diploma
  • Ten (10) years’ experience in electric generation facilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with General Electric aero derivative LM 6000 combustion turbines is desirable and preferred

The successful candidate must:

  • Be able to perform effectively in a team environment without direct supervision
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Power Point, Excel, and Outlook
  • Must have good interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to maintain a positive and professional working relationship with others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, requires the ability to communicate in English
  • Must be able to work alone
  • Must be proficient in 3 way communication and the phonetic alphabet
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment and perform effectively without supervision.
  • Physically - must have the ability to climb stairs, ladders and maneuver around equipment
  • Must be physically able to climb and squat to access equipment
  • Have the ability to work well with NRG employees and others outside of NRG
  • Use discretion concerning confidential and sensitive company information; demonstrate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment rated up to 345KV, able to work in high noise areas.
  • Respond in a timely basis when contacted to work after normal working hours as needed
  • Performance of duties requires working rotating shifts and response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week.

 

Working Conditions:

  • The Control Operator is a single individual that works during off hours and weekends in a normal control room area environment and/or out-doors work. All generating equipment is outside. The work environment at generating plants include: working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Must be physically able to walk for an extended periods of time during various weather conditions
  • Requires operation of a personal computer.
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Occasionally requires lifting up to 50 pounds, as appropriate, to perform the duties and responsibilities of the Control Operator.
