Job Summary:


  • Plant Specialist III is a position intended for an individual with extensive experience and advanced subject matter knowledge in a specialized field.  In this position the individual will be expected to provide advanced technical support for a given area or type of equipment in the plant, particularly inspection - structural, boilers and pressure vessels.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Perform field inspections, field measurements and equipment walk downs.
  • Supports and emphasizes the importance of Safety and Environmental over production policies.
  • Administers inspection contracts and services.
  • Coordinates vendor audits and inspections.
  • Provides interpretation of ASME/NBIC/Texas Boiler Law, Code requirements.
  • Interprets inspection results and determines adherence to applicable codes and specifications.
  • Acts as a liaison between inspection and customer/peer groups and between NRG and the authorized inspector and the jurisdiction (State).
  • Perform routine unit/equipment performance monitoring and testing.
  • Attend training in area of specialization.
  • Prepare written reports in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Provide verbal reports or summaries of technical subjects in a simplified and broadly understood manner.
  • Participate and/or lead teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units (i.e.: Root Cause Analysis, Change Analysis preventative or predictive maintenance plan development).
  • Coordinate activities with Vendors/Contractors and outside support groups.
  • Performs timely and technically correct inspections with minimal supervision.
  • Evaluates structural integrity of existing steel and concrete components with understanding of when Engineering support is needed.
  • Assists subject matter experts in preparation of nondestructive examination procedures, inspection plans, and accept/reject criteria.
  • Provide technical support to plant operations and maintenance activities.
  • Be proactive with problem recognition, using independent judgment to provide input on ways to solve them.
  • Directs, or performs routine unit/equipment performance monitoring and testing and makes recommendations based on the data collected.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or out of doors work environment.  This could include working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures, and high humidity areas.
  • Work overtime and non-standard hours as required.
  • Occasional travel outside the business area.
  • Use of PPE (Personnel Protective Equipment), which may include safety glasses, hard hat, protective footwear, ear plugs, safety harness, respirator, gloves etc. 
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals.

Minimum Requirements:


  • 2 year Associate’s degree technical training at an accredited university or technical institute and ten (10) years of experience in a power plant or industrial facility
  • or
  • Twelve (12) years of experience in inspection services in a related industry
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle and valid Driver’s License.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in inspection in a power generating station, specifically structural, boilers and pressure vessels.
  • Certified with American Welding Society as Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI) & ASNT-TC-1A Level II MT, PT, VT and UT. 


Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Broad range of working knowledge pertaining to non-destructive testing, power generation component assessment and related industry codes / standards / regulations.
  • Experience in testing, inspection and development / implementation of technical solutions of in-service power generation components.
  • Have current or be certifiable as: American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI) & ASNT-TC-1A Level II MT, PT, VT and UT. 
  • Understanding of work planning and scheduling.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage projects in area of specialization.
  • Detailed knowledge of power plant systems and equipment in area of specialization.
  • Ability to understand, interpret or formally submit modifications to drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to apply applicable industry and corporate codes and standards.
  • Ability to perform inspections of power plant systems and equipment and take field measurements.
  • Ability to organize and interpret data collected in the plant and to make recommendations based on the findings.
  • Operation of a personal computer.
  • Ability to use standard business software to produce spreadsheets and reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other personnel.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional working relationship with others.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and follow written corporate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.


Physical Requirements:


  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect and/or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
