This Plant Engineer position provides advanced technical support, troubleshooting, developing technical specifications for repairs and component replacements, project development and management, budget development, contractor management and tracking, outage planning, and outage support for a large coal-and-gas fired power plant.  This position interfaces directly with plant and operational managers, supervisors, craft personnel, contractors, and technical consultants.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering and technical support and assistance for operating, maintenance, and performance issues at a power generation facility.
  • Manage capital and expense projects. This includes conceptual design, budget development, specifications, detailed engineering, equipment procurement, contractor and construction management, commission new equipment, staff training, & project closeout. Project work retrofits as well as new additions.
  • Complete economic analysis and feasibility studies on existing and proposed plant equipment or modifications.  Complete budget estimates to support O&M and projects.  Generate bid specifications to support projects and maintenance and perform an engineering evaluation on the bids.
  • Compliance with applicable codes including UL, ASME, IEEE, National Board, Federal, State, and Local Codes.
  • Provide engineering analysis, inspections, and support to operations and maintenance to keep equipment running at maximum reliability and performance levels while maintaining personnel safety, asset safety, and environmental compliance.
  • Monitor equipment performance.  Identify and troubleshoot deviations from expected values that impact unit performance. Review and analyze predictive and preventive maintenance data.
  • Develop and implement recommendations to reduce operational and maintenance expenses.  Provide long range planning for maintenance, repair, and capital improvement projects.
  • Provide input for development of annual operations and maintenance budgets based upon knowledge of inspections, reliability plans, and maintenance requirements.
  • Complete Root Cause Analysis on equipment failures, loss of unit capacity, and other operating incidents.
  • Participate in and/or lead teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units (i.e. Root Cause Analysis and Condition Assessments). Develop checklists, procedures and training programs for plant personnel for new and existing equipment.
  • Direct the work of other Plant Specialists and contractors as required.
  • Support the establishment and enforcement of safe working conditions and practice safe work habits in all activities.


Secondary Responsibilities:

  • May be required to fill in on a temporary basis for other positions at the plant.
  • May be required to perform work at another plant location on a temporary basis
  • Complete all instructor-led and computer-based training classes as assigned




  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from an accredited University in an Engineering discipline; Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in Power or comparable Industrial facilities. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plant Operations, Maintenance, and engineering in Power or comparable industrial facility.



  • Working knowledge of and experience with power plant systems and operation consistent with level of responsibility.
  • Good technical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills to include spreadsheets, project management, databases, and word processing.
  • Proven planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work under demanding time and budget constraints.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing requirements and quickly resolve issues and complete assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and to identify problems and solutions without constant guidance.
  • Ability to coordinate complex multiple projects and activities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and within teams, and strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Uses discretion concerning confidential and sensitive company information.
  • Ability to work and communicate with all levels of plant staff including craft, technical, and administrative personnel, as well as outside parties.
  • Ability to develop and review equipment repair specifications to the component level.
  • Ability to perform inspections of power plant systems and equipment and take field measurements.
  • Ability to organize and interpret data collected in the plant and to make recommendations based on the findings.
  • Good understanding of work planning and scheduling.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Detailed knowledge of power plant systems and equipment in area of specialization.
  • Ability to understand and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply applicable industry and corporate codes and standards.
  • Ability to use Personal Computer and common office software such as Excel, Power Point, MS Word, MS Access, and Plant Performance and analysis programs.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional working relationship with others.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and follow written corporate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.

  • Excellent communication skills.



  • Experience in a coal-fired power plant.
  • Experience and/or aptitude in power plant instrumentation and electrical systems including  distributed control systems, local programmable process controllers, low and intermediate voltage power systems, and electric motor maintenance.
  • Project management experience at an electric generation station.
  • Experience developing & implementing PdM and Equipment Reliability programs.
  • Experience with Infrared Thermography equipment
  • Experience with OSI PI or similar Data Historian
