Job Summary: 

Responsible to develop, manage, implement, and track processes for the Generator Owner & Operator requirements of NERC standards across the NRG Fleet of generating units.  The primary focus is on the FAC, MOD, and PRC family of standards. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Comprehend and implement the GO/GOP requirements of NERC FAC, MOD, and PRC Standards.
    • Develop and manage programs to implementation and track NERC Standards across the NRG fleet of generating units
    • Prepare procedures and guidance documents to facilitate and execute compliance to NERC Standards for the NRG fleet of generating units.
    • Specify, direct, and manage the work activities of contracted engineering services used to support compliance activities.
    • Develop, assemble, and store detailed evidence and records to demonstrate compliance to specific requirements
  • Performs evaluation of Protection System design and relay settings to fulfill the technical and procedural obligations of NERC standard requirements.  Develop transparent calculations for relay setting development.
  • Develop and maintain relay setting and protection system documents and databases
  • Prepare protection system testing and maintenance specifications.
  • Develop or supervise the creation of testing and scope documents for the maintenance individual generating unit protection systems.
  • Develop and maintain generating unit dynamic models and databases.  Coordinate with engineering contractors the verification of model data.
  • Communicate, train, and assist generating station personnel in the execution of specified requirements and responsibilities.
  • Prepare NERC audit documents and evidence files.  Represent NRG to Regional NERC auditors with written and verbal communication and testimony.
  • Create and maintain ETAP models for load flow, short circuit, and arc flash studies.
  • Prepare and maintain drawings, manuals and other documentation. Use AutoCAD for drawing development and maintenance.
  • Provide technical direction and assistance for NRG O&M personnel or contractors performing specified activities at generating stations.
  • Manage and coordinate the performing of arc flash studies at generating stations
  • Support additional projects within Engineering & Technical Services specifying, designing, or constructing projects in accordance with plant requirements or needs.

  

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or out of doors work environment including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas.
  • Work overtime and non-standard hours as required.
  • Requires occasional travel.
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.).
  • May be required to work near rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals and hot equipment/environments.
  • Requires operation of a personal computer.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma with demonstrated skill sets from 5 or more years of experience in electrical protection system design or maintenance, combined with in-depth experience fulfilling compliance to NERC standards.
  • Understands generator systems, power plant auxiliaries, or similar industrial facilities. 
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university strongly preferred.
  • Detailed knowledge of generators, excitation systems, power plant electrical auxiliary systems, protection system design and maintenance, application of relay settings, and protection coordination principles.
  • Understands the analysis of three-phase electrical power systems, electrical phasors, load flow, sequence components, and the application of relay protection elements and settings.
  • Can develop electrical models for load flow, dynamic performance, short-circuit, and arc flash analysis.
  • Understands maintenance practices and troubleshooting techniques of electrical and protection systems
  • An understanding of the regulatory structure and requirements of NERC FAC, MOD, and PRC standards.

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply applicable industry and company standards and codes
  • Ability to use PC and associated software applications (MS Office) to collect and analyze data and produce spreadsheets, databases, and reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts (verbal and written).
  • Ability to support and maintain schedules of multiple, concurrent assignments
  • Ability to read, create and follow written policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar application programs.
  • Ability to work and execute assignments with limited supervision
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations in-person or through electronic median to groups of 50 or more people.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and protecting the environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Occasionally requires lifting under 50 lbs. as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
