Summary:  Design, develop, maintain and enhance NRG’s generation Energy Management System (EMS) systems that provide capabilities for real time control and dispatch, monitoring, planning and management of coal, gas, oil fired power plants as well as renewables.  Interface with clients to determine requirements, resolve issues in a dispatch center environment.  Provide subject matter expertise to the Commercial Operations groups in order to assist with problem solving and as a resource for training and development.  Supports commercial and plant users and information technology projects by providing consultation and technical expertise. Provides technical support for EMS functions.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Experience with designing, developing, and supporting complex generating management systems.
  • Must have expertise with real time EMS systems.
  • Energy Management Systems (EMS) for control and dispatch.
  • Strong working knowledge of AGC and Scada systems
  • Historian systems.
  • Knowledge of field equipment including RTU’s and Meters.
  • Must have multi-market knowledge, specifically ISO real time requirements.
  • Ercot, PJM, CAISO, MISO, NYISO, NEISO markets.
  • Must have intranet / internet architecture skills.
  • Must be very familiar with NERC CIP compliance associated with ESP on EMS systems.
  • Provide professional customer service.
  • Provide technical solutions to meet the commercial and plant requirements.
  • Performs PC, server, application, data center, and general network troubleshooting and problem resolution in support of clients at their location.
  • Performs integration of hardware and software as it relates to systems, data, LAN and stand-alone workstations and all peripheral devices for business operational requirements.
  • Provides a consistent interface between clients and vendors as it relates to vendor support, corporate standards, product upgrades, installation and maintenance.
  • Confers with end users to determine types of hardware and software support needed through one-on-one training, testing of hardware and software installation and advice on hardware component problems.
  • Familiar with EMS database updates, software and display builds.

 

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent work experience. 

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with and detailed knowledge of vendor plant systems such as ABB Ranger NMR2, RTUs, Pi, MV90, etc.
  • NERC CIP tasks for evidence logging and reporting.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem resolution skills required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients in identifying technical tools needed.
  • Ability to evaluate leading edge software products (PC workstations, LAN Network Interface cards, file servers and related technologies).
  • Ability to work with vendors in troubleshooting vendor hardware/software products.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with users and vendors.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer, MS Outlook
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required in order to provide appropriate client support and interaction.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Works effectively in a team environment.
  • Works well under pressure, remaining focused and calm in the face of distractions and changing priorities. Ability to prioritize workload.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Duties are performed during standard business hours and overtime based on project requirements. In addition, on call rotation, and 24-hour on-call support will require some nights and weekends.
  • Must be able to lift servers and monitors.

 

Working Conditions

  • Office environment, trade floors, plant sites, data centers, and operational plant environments.
    • Safety is a primary importance at NRG. 
  • Major activities performed on PC connected to Intel/Unix servers.
  • Requirements for telephone consultation & support with clients. 
  • Valid Texas driver’slicense is required.
  • Travel when necessary.

 

Experience:  4 - 7 years experience.

  • 5+ years of EMS design and development experience for custom / vendor application development environment with increasing levels of responsibility.  Technologies include:
    • EMS database, software, and displays
    • PL/SQL for Oracle and/or SQL Server
    • Linux, HPUX, Unix scripting and product extension languages
    • Knowledge of products and able to work independently to support, develop and maintain applications
    • Good communication and customer interaction skills
    • Ability to lead technical design, installation and development efforts
    • Ability to resolve production issues, pull in required resources collaboratively across teams, and manage the issue to completion
    • Technically recognized as an expert in one or more areas
