Job Summary: 


The primary function of the Engineering is to support Operations Analysis & Business Management, leveraging technical and business knowledge to provide cross-functional support to Plant Operations. The role requires a highly motivated and organized individual with strong problem solving skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Support NRG’s Unit Characteristics annual review process, including working with Plant Operations, Commercial Operations, Asset Management, and Risk to review and benchmark data, evaluate impact of proposed changes on expected generation and Gross Margin, and obtain necessary stakeholder approval. Support effective communication and presentation of material to relevant stakeholders.
  • Conduct ad hoc analyses to evaluate and challenge existing Unit Characteristics assumptions and underlying methodologies, including appropriate and consistent start and variable cost bases and incorporation of site-appropriate Major Maintenance adders, to promote accurate generation forecasting. Ensure appropriate alignment of costs with ISO bidding parameters and regulatory framework.
  • Perform annual heat rate performance factor verifications, providing results and recommendations to Plant Operations & Commercial Operations. When necessary, work with Engineering & Tech Services to evaluate potential performance factor changes.
  • Support ISO inquiries related to various bidding parameters, including heat rates, start times, and variable operating costs, working with the plants and other stakeholders to provide timely and accurate information. Support review of proposed ISO programmatic changes and evaluate potential fleet impacts, working with Regulatory to provide comments, when appropriate.
  • Utilize multiple data sources to collect, analyze, consolidate, and provide the timely and accurate presentation of various business metrics, trends, and patterns within plant operations, including plant performance (availability and reliability), safety, and financials (Capex, O&M, and G&A). Utilize data sources appropriately for specific ad hoc assignments, effectively converting data to meaningful information for management.
  • Support NRG 10Q / 10K filings regarding fleet capacity, generation, and planned Environmental CapEx. Work with Asset Management, Accounting, FP&A, M&A, Risk, and other stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate information for financial reporting and to support ad hoc requests for management presentations.
  • Support monthly reporting and data analysis for the following areas: Henwood Comparator, Benchmarking, EFOR / Lost Margin Opportunity (LMO) Tracker, and Sustainability and CO2 Emissions reporting. Create ad hoc reports to meet various business and management insight needs.
  • Identify opportunities for workflow/process improvements and work with functional areas to jointly develop ways to enhance productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness through appropriate applications.
  • Support Plant Operations by providing onsite support through periods of transition and/or long term absence of key personnel (e.g., Station Business Manager), supplemental outage support, or similar, as necessary.
  • Conduct engineering / technical review of PSAM projects; Analyze ROI and Payback in a forward looking manner to support optimization of fleet-wide capital allocation. Perform historical analyses to evaluate accuracy of assumptions. Support review of PowerSAM assumptions to ensure alignment with Unit Characteristics and associated budget workflow.
  • Support fleet-wide outage scheduling decisions, working with Engineering & Tech Services and Risk to optimize spend and maximize returns.
  • Support SAP HANA implementation and associated Plant Operations training, as well as implementation of new CMS Tool.
  • Promote Safety & Environmental compliance activities.


Working Conditions:


  • Normal office environment and/or out of doors work environment. (Including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations)
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle; Texas Driver’s License
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect or collect data on plant equipment
  • Work overtime and non-standard hours as required
  • Requires occasional travel outside the business area
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.)
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals and hot equipment/environments
  • Requires operation of a personal computer


Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering  and 3 years of experience in the power industry.    
  • The position level will be based on experience


Preferred Qualifications:


  • MBA – Masters in Business Administration is a plus
