FUNCTION:  Perform Operational, Mechanical, and Steam Distribution Maintenance work in the Steam, Cogeneration, and Cooling Plants. Assist the Senior Operator with operational duties as required on a rotating shift.  Work under the Maintenance Supervisor during daylight Operations when assigned.


SUPERVISOR:   PLANT MANAGER I LEAD OPERATOR with direction of Senior Operator

(MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR when assigned to Maintenance Department)



  • Identify and diagnose maintenance problems, determine and perform a corrective action including disassembly, repair, overhaul, re-assembly, check-out, clean-up, and provide feedback for inventory records and engineering changes.
  • Properly apply Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), and other safety measures.
  • Assist Senior Plant Operator in operating gas/oil-fired boilers, diesel generators, chillers, and auxiliary equipment for the efficient production of electricity, steam, and chilled water.
  • Control temperature and pressure of steam leaving the Plant.
  • Operate pumps and heaters to supply proper fuel to boilers and diesels.
  • Operate chemical feed system, water softeners, and boiler feed pumps, for supply of proper water to boilers, chillers, and diesels.
  • Change charts, take readings, and totalize log sheets as directed.
  • Periodically check the Plant grounds, Chiller Plant, oil tanks, oil transfer pumps, unloading stations, fans and auxiliary equipment, and perform water chemistry analysis.
  • Upon orders of Senior Plant Operator, take equipment out of service for repairs.
  • Perform Plant switching and valving when directed.
  • Perform such other related duties as assigned.
  • Troubleshooting and general mechanical -diagnose source of trouble where one or more systems are involved to correct improper/performance of equipment; select and use proper maintenance  procedures; adjust, align,  balance, repair, overhaul, rebuild,       test, inspect all plant  equipment  such  as  boilers,  diesels,  heat  exchangers,  pumps,  fans,  compressors, blowers, valves, chillers.
  • Cover shifts as required.
  • Assist on Call-Outs with Maintenance Department as required.
  • Complete Safety Inspections, PM's, and planned maintenance activities as assigned.
  • When assigned  to the   Maintenance   Department,  work under  the direction  of the Maintenance Supervisor or his designee.





  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1 year experience identifying and diagnosing maintenance problems, determining and performing a corrective action including disassembly, repair, overhaul, re-assembly, check-out, clean-up, and provide feedback for inventory records and engineering changes.
  • Successful candidates are required to received a rating of Recommended on the NRG Pre-employment Assessment test. 
  • Experience in boiler, chilled water, and diesel plant operations preferred.  
  • Successfully demonstrates mechanical skills as evaluated by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Has adequate physical strength and endurance to perform duties of the job, including work in hot or cold locations, work from ladders, ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and stand or walk for long periods.
  • Possess a valid PA motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Aptitude and interest in boiler, chilled water, and diesel plant operation.
  • Ability to read and understand Operating Instructions pertaining to equipment.
  • Ability to complete and pass the Plant Operator Qualification Sheet, as per Operating Policy #8.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to complete tasks with little supervision.
