Job Description

GenOn Energy, Inc., a wholesale generator, owns and operates power generation facilities across the United States, primarily in the Northeast and California. We generate electricity using natural gas, coal, and oil resources. 

This position will serve as a an Instrument and Control Technician performing calibrations, troubleshooting electrical and control issues, working on breakers, repairing control valves, etc.  Additionally, this position will coordinate and plan their work and others on shift in the absence of management personnel. This position will also direct and perform performance testing.  


Duties shall include, but not be limited to:


  • Use tools and equipment to route conduit, threaded pipe, and/or tubing, route cabling and perform low voltage readings to trouble shoot motor control circuits. 
  • Observes and records readings of required indicators and/or instruments, for safe operation within prescribed limits.
  • Able to read complex prints and replace/fabricate minor parts and equipment as required.
  • Heavy equipment operator (e.g. cranes, telehandler, mobile man-lifts, tractors)
  • Must correctly interpret complex detailed electrical and electronic drawings and blueprints.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with and be responsible for electrical and mechanical tagging (Lock-Out-Tag-Out) including switching and the accurate completion of the required forms for equipment isolation as directed.
  • Qualified to fulfill and perform journeymen skills of a CT Tech – MECH.  This includes the ability to use tools and equipment to disassemble and re-assembly small plant components such as pumps and valves, running threaded pipe, and/or tubing. 
  • Qualified to fulfill and perform journeymen skills of a CT Tech – OPER.  This includes the ability to start stop and operates turbine generator equipment and auxiliaries. 
  • Will be required to successfully complete a Company-provided training regimen specifically designed to develop skills associated with combustion turbine and combined cycle operations, which includes an Oral Board.


Minimum Requirements


  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License
  • Must be willing to work extra and/or irregular hours in a 24-hour shift operation.
  • Must receive a rating of “recommended’ on the NRG Energy Pre Employment Skills Assessment.
  • Training in AC‑DC circuit theory, AC‑DC machines, and electronic theory and components.
  • Must demonstrate journeyman levels of expertise in electrical and electronic controls.
  • Must possess the degrees of maturity, initiative, leadership, judgment, and dependability required for effective direction of others.
  • Must able to troubleshoot problems to a component level and replace equipment.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with the Company’s Safety rules.


Physical Requirements


  • Adequate physical qualifications, including heath, physique and sensory functions, color perception, near/distant visual acuity, hearing and pulmonary functions pertinent to performance of job duties.
  • Participation in annual medical surveillance provided by the Company.
  • Strength and dexterity adequate to safely perform all the duties of this classification.
  • Must be capable of passing the Company’s physical qualifications examination and fit-test prerequisite to suing respiratory protective devices and/or supplied air breathing equipment.
