Summary

Leads on shift operating functions and is the on-site operational authority outside of normal business hours.  The Lead Operator supervises activities both inside and outside of the Control Room.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sound operation of plant equipment
  • Understand and execute the equipment clearance procedure (LOTO)
  • Properly directs Control Room, plant auxiliary equipment and systems operation during normal and emergency operation
  • Communicate information clearly, both orally and written
  • Assist others in performance testing
  • Assist in on-the-job training of other Operators
  • Troubleshoot plant equipment to resolve operational problems
  • Generate and review Work Requests for execution of equipment repair
  • Operate various computer systems to receive, analyze, comprehend and input data
  • Monitor and record data available through the use of various instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures
  • Assist in providing skill enhancement training to other personnel
  • Implement Plant Emergency Procedures as needed
  • Operate electric generating units to control flow and processing of electrical energy and process steam to customer
  • Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret meter and gauge readings
  • Assist maintenance personnel in performance of maintenance activities to include use of tools, equipment and Company vehicles as necessary
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and company safety and environmental procedures, taking action to prevent noncompliance and hazards.
  • Promotes an attitude of commitment towards a safe work workplace and environmental compliance for the Operating Team, as well as demonstrating a commitment to other departmental areas.

Working Conditions:

  • Power Plant Environment
  • Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
  • Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual).
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e.…steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc.
  • Have ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
  • Ability to discern assorted colors

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Five years’ specific experience in a power plant environment; 
  • OR
  • Seven years’ experience in an oilfield environment, or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate working knowledge of power plant equipment such as motors, pumps, boilers, turbines, generators, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, cooling towers, pollution control equipment, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc.
  • Successful completion of initial qualification program (Basic Duties and Phase I), or ability to demonstrate required knowledge through oral and written examination.
  • Sound knowledge of power plant safety, especially in areas such as chemical handling, high energy systems, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, heavy equipment operations, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge of NRG LOTO program through oral and written examination.
  • Knowledge/ability to master and apply the fundamentals of personal computer operation, e.g., basic word processing, basic spreadsheets, and electronic mail.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two year Associates degree from an accredited Technical college
  • Three years’ or more experience working in combined cycle natural gas power plants
  • Sound knowledge/ability to understand fundamental principles related to Physics, Mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermodynamics, chemistry, and metallurgy.

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to perform flow, pressure and meter calculations
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, procedures and technical manuals
  • Use hand and power tools and equipment
  • Communicate conditions of plant system and equipment to others
  • Apply knowledge of power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision-making and work tasks
  • Operate computers and printers
  • Discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel
  • Work without supervision inspection while carrying out duties
  • Take, record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation
  • Meet physical requirements of the job such as perform tasks while standing, walking, climbing and squatting.  Work with extended reach above head and in front of body and lift 50 pounds and carry while walking distances of up to 10 feet
  • Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment and maintain operating licenses and certifications.  TDL required
  • Work may require cross training and travel to other facilities
  • Sound knowledge/ability to understand fundamental principles related to Physics, Mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermodynamics, chemistry, and metallurgy.
  • Successful completion of initial qualification program (Basic Duties and Phase I), or ability to demonstrate required knowledge through oral and written examination.

  • Excellent team work skills including the ability to coach junior level staff
  • Strong verbal and written skills with the ability to succinctly describe mechanical and other systems
  • Sound quantitative skills and attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent knowledge of safety systems as applied in an industrial environment

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures.
  • Work around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.
  • Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.
  • Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
  • Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
  • Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
