Job Summary: 

  • Corporate level position supporting NRG’s fleet of steam and/or gas turbines across the country.  Steam/gas Turbine Engineer/Specialist will provide on-site support for field inspections, condition assessments and run, repair, replace recommendations. Coordinate repair activities with various repair shops and suppliers.  Assist in developing and/or reviewing quality plans in addition to monitoring and auditing supplier quality. Emphasis on communication amongst peers, site management, and leadership team.  Review of equipment histories, applicable manufacturers’ bulletins, and operational history and requirements to develop long range plans for steam/gas turbines.  Support our culture for safety, environmental compliance, and quality.

 

  • Location preference is on the West Coast.   Open to considering candidates that are located within the US continential states, based on the company fit and candidate qualifications.

 

  Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Supports and emphasizes the importance of safety and environmental programs
  • Evaluates component condition and repair options and performs risk assessment for maintenance activities
  • Participates and/or leads teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units
  • Communicates with customers regarding condition of equipment and repair work scope
  • Inspects completed work or work in progress to assure job quality
  • Performs field inspections and takes field measurements
  • Coordinates activities with Vendors/Contractors, other divisions and departments
  • Recognizes problems and is proactive in helping to resolve them
  • Performs root cause analysis of system and equipment problems
  • Develops quality work plans when required
  • Performs engineering calculations in area of responsibility
  • Assists in outage planning and economic evaluation of turbine projects as needed
  • May be required to manage projects in area of expertise
  • Ensures company resources are used in a cost effective manner
  • Prepares written reports in assigned area of responsibility
  • Performs technical duties in area of responsibility
  • Develops and maintains technical specifications for purchase of replacement parts, vendor repairs and maintenance standards
  • Identifies and implements new or existing repair technology in area of responsibility
  • Track AIB/TIL’s for steam/gas turbines/generators and assess implementation and compliance strategy
  • Qualifies vendors and suppliers for parts and services in area of responsibility

 

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or outside work environment (including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating plants)
  • Requires travel to and from NRG plants or vendor facilities across the country (approx. 50% of the time)
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle and a valid driver’s license
  • Requires personal protective safety equipment while in the plants
  • Overtime or non-standard hours may be required
  • Requires operating a personal computer

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of Baccalaureate Degree in appropriate Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university and 5 years of experience in steam or gas turbine equipment maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting.

           OR

  • High School diploma or equivalent  and a minimum of 10 years of experience in steam or gas turbine equipment maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineering degree and minimum 15 years of experience in steam or gas turbine engineering, maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting

           OR

  • 20 years of experience in maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting of steam or gas turbines
  • Experience in utilities
  • Training and experience in vibration analysis and balancing of large rotating equipment
  • Knowledge of working materials and metallurgy of steam turbines and components
  • Knowledge of mechanical hydraulic control systems for large steam turbines

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills with craft personnel, site leadership, as well as management.
  • Ability to take a leadership role meetings and communications around steam or gas turbine issues.
  • Project management skills
  • Knowledge of power plant systems
  • Knowledge of turbine repair processes
  • Ability to prepare written reports and presentations to management

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data on plant equipment
  • Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs to service / inspect turbine deck and work being performed
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.)
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals
