Summary:  This individual will lead and coordinate design, development and production support of NRG’s multi market interface systems to Independent System Operators (ISO’s), and other systems to support our Demand Response business.  The position requires coaching and direct staff supervision including job assignment, training and performance to ensure alignment with department goals and objectives.  Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, leading significant portions of critical and complex application work and projects; working on multiple projects, systems, issues as a project leader providing technical direction; leading the planning, analysis, design, development, testing, maintenance, enhancements, integration, and/or maintenance support activities while efficiently and effectively leveraging local and shared services team members as required.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Experience with designing, developing, and supporting complex energy and capacity market and customer interface systems.
    • Must have expertise with ISO’s.
      • PJM, ERCOT, CAISO, NYISO, NEISO and IESO market interfaces.
    • Must have multi-market knowledge, specifically Demand Response ISO registration, auction, event management and settlement requirements.
    • Must have Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems experience.
    • Must have understanding of Customer Portals and Metering.
      • Customer bidding and energy management.
      • Metering to include real time and interval accounting.
      • Customer notification systems.
  • Lead and coordinate IT requests, prioritization and business communication related to production support for Demand Response functions. 
  • Be the communication path for escalation, coordination and requests from the business stakeholders to IT.
  • Lead technical team through implementation when needed.
  • Lead the development of prototypes/proofs of concept to validate key project assumptions prior to making significant investments.
  • Coordinate the documentation of functional and technical design specifications.
  • Develop and execute implementation plans including installation of new hardware and software, user training, and post-implementation system monitoring.
  • Ensure the successful transition from development to operations including operations procedures and tools such as process control points, reports, and automated monitoring.
  • Regularly report status and raise issues/risks as appropriate. Anticipate and adjust for problems and roadblocks while eliminating roadblocks within control.
  • Effectively communicates with team, customers and sponsors.  Able to establish credibility by appealing to reason and using research, data, facts and figures; able to build support for ideas; win concessions or resolve problems without damaging relationships.
  • Collaborate with team members and operational groups to identify and prioritize/reprioritize work when necessary including shared services.
  • Supervise, establish goals and provide formal performance evaluations for team members.  Also responsible for ongoing, informal coaching and mentoring.
  • Develop strong working relationships with individuals at all levels of company, operations, and IT applications and infrastructure teams.
  • Manage relationship with hardware and software vendors as well as professional service providers.
  • Determines staffing requirements and forms project teams.  May develop detailed project plans and schedules or assists in the development of work plan timelines.
  • Leads the implementation of IT initiatives to support business strategy.  Develops timelines, monitors and tracks project progress.
  • Monitors project milestones and critical dates to identify potential jeopardy of project schedule.  Identifies ways to resolve schedule issues.  Keeps management aware of the situation.  Negotiates changes in the project schedules, deliverables, or cost with the project sponsor, as required.
  • Implements technologies to improve the performance of a business process and increase profitability.
  • Leads the identification of best sources of data and works with architects to ensure feasibility with corporate data sources, when needed.
  • Leads projects following disciplined software development processes.  May develop and/or modify complex application components using disciplined software development processes.  Conducts unit testing to ensure application meets specifications.
  • Oversees systems testing and leads integration testing.  Assists in user testing.
  • Conducts formal review with business sponsor at project completion to confirm acceptance and satisfaction.  Tracks user satisfaction levels.
  • Coordinates test or production schedules.  Creates and/or monitors reports regarding results or monitors system’s functionality.  Analyzes reports and makes recommendations/solutions on findings.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of assigned applications.
  • Accountable for system sustaining activities related to system development/maintenance work, metrics tracking and adherence to development lifecycle methodology.
  • Looks for opportunities to eliminate inefficiencies.
  • Monitors system and application performance metrics.  May provide input to solution and/or recommendations for improvements.
  • Coordinates software inspections, quality reviews and ensures team’s compliance with application architecture and quality processes, principals, policies and standards.  Develops convergence plans toward standards, as needed.  Provides input to policies and standards.
  • Monitors metrics to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Remain abreast of current technologies and best practices that may be applicable to the company.





Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (Computer Science, MIS, or Engineering preferred).


Experience:  10+ years of technical experience, Minimum of three years’ experience as lead, supervisor or project manager.  Experience forming and leading a team from concept through implementation.  Project Management experience preferred.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with and detailed knowledge of customer systems (Siebel, SuiteCRM, or Salesforce)
  • Knowledge of integrating open source software such as Splunk, Clover ETL, MySQL.
  • Custom software experience with capacity business and systems that support Demand Response.
  • Knowledge of Software Configuration Management discipline and systems change management processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required in order to provide appropriate cross functional support and interaction.
  • Creation and delivery of presentations on business and technical topics.
  • Ability to manage multiple efforts simultaneously.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem resolution skills.
  • Detail oriented, self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, remaining focused and calm in the face of distractions, changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to productively use NRG’s toolset – Azure DevOps, MS Office Applications, MS Outlook, MS Project, Visio, Internet Explorer.
  • Proven experience in object –oriented application development.
  • Understanding of Relational Database concepts is a must.

  • Adept at communication with at all levels of the organization, both verbally and written.
  • Requires knowledge of one or more business function/process and understanding of the business and IT strategies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be willing to travel when needed
  • Duties are performed during standard business hours and overtime based on project requirements.
  • Valid drivers license and the ability to attend meetings and respond to application problems at various corporate sites when necessary

  • 24-hour on-call support will require some nights and weekends.

  • Willingness to work overtime hours as necessary, especially during critical issue resolution and to achieve project milestones.
