General Summary of Position

Goal Zero Product Development is responsible for the internal design and qualification for all products.  We have a strong local team and we also work directly with our partners in Asia to manufacture what is designed here in Utah.  We have expertise with solar panels, batteries, LEDs, microcontrollers, and power electronics.  We are passionate about inventing the future of this industry.


The Firmware/Embedded Software Engineer will work on new product lines, taking our current product offering and innovating beyond today’s features and specifications. We are looking for individuals with a passion for technology and strong skills in firmware design that interacts closely with the hardware in our power electronics products. You will be joining the engineering team within our product development group, working alongside our mechanical and electrical engineers to design upcoming innovative products.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Firmware development:

  • Manage the development of firmware for microcontrollers (MCUs) and system on chip (SoCs) used as the controllers in our systems.
  • Understanding of memory types and organization in embedded controllers.
  • Write control systems algorithms for applications such as pure sine inverters, max power-point tracking solar chargers, fault condition protection, switching power supplies, and multi-stage charge controllers.
  • Work closely with hardware engineering in developing and defining the specifications for future products, including recommendations on emerging technologies and design best practices.
  • Document design to facilitate interaction with other developers as well as manufacturing partners and product documentation authors


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum education:  BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Consumer Electronics, or similar field, or equivalent work experience, required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in software design on embedded platforms as it relates to consumer electronics or power electronics. PIC and/or ARM architecture experience a plus.
  • Very familiar with microcontrollers, low-level firmware that interacts directly with hardware, as well as interpreting schematic and circuit layout of digital and analog circuits
  • Command of MCU peripherals such as PWM, ADC, DAC, timers, LCD drivers, button interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, etc.
  • Experience with IoT technologies, WiFi Bluetooth/BLE preferred. A cursory understanding of underlying web technologies preferred, e.g. secure cloud interaction and device provisioning.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ required.  Javascript a plus
  • Experience with lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, etc.
  • Solid board bring-up, testing, and debug skills
  • Experience in power management, power-on self-test, and fault handling
  • Familiar with general debug tools such as logic analyzers, trace, and profilers as well as interfaces such as JTAG
  • Experience with version control a plus, e.g. Git
  • Comfortable with datasheets, part selection, and sample procurement
  • Experience with consumer electronics products/goods a strong plus, including work with batteries, lights, power conversion
  • Strong sense of organization and efficient design in both system architecture and individual algorithms.
  • Evening and weekend work as needed to complete projects.

  • Domestic and International travel up to 20% required
