General Summary of Position

Goal Zero Product Development is responsible for the internal design and qualification for all products.  We have a strong local team and we also work directly with our partners in Asia to manufacture what is designed here in Utah.  We have expertise with solar panels, batteries, LEDs, microcontrollers, IoT, and power electronics.  We are passionate about inventing the future of this industry.

 

This posting is for an Electrical Systems Engineer to work with us on new product lines in residential power, taking our current product offering and innovating beyond today’s features and specifications. We are looking for individuals with a passion for technology and strong skills in electrical design that help form the foundation of our power electronics products. You will be joining the engineering team within our product development group, working alongside mechanical, firmware, and electrical engineers to design upcoming innovative products.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Well versed in fundamentals of photovoltaics, energy storage systems, power conversion, battery charging
  • Highly capable at electrical design as it pertains to systems design of residential solar installations and energy storage
  • Subject matter expert to support technical aspects of business development activities with installers, AHJs, and end-customers
  • Generate electrical drawings and single-line diagrams for product applications
  • Work tightly with engineering team in developing and defining the specifications for future products, including recommendations on emerging technologies and design best practices
  • Support software and firmware engineers in development for the controllers and applications in our systems
  • Close cooperation with project managers to deliver products within scope, budget, and quality requirements
  • Conduct and participate in design reviews
  • Document design to facilitate interaction with other developers, manufacturing partners, QA, and product documentation authors
  • Proficient working alongside teammates as well as independent, self-starting individual contributor
     

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar field of study plus minimum of 3 years of directly relevant work experience, or equivalent total of 7 years relevant work experience preferred
  • Must be proficient in producing electrical CAD
  • Must have experience with electrical test and measurement equipment

 

Preferred Requirements

  • Strong preference for applicants with a BS in Electrical Engineering or similar field plus 5-7 years of directly relevant experience
  • Strong preference for experience in electrical system design as it applies to residential PV and storage products
  • Working knowledge of rooftop PV power conversion technology including micro-inverters, optimizers, string inverters, and alternative
  • Familiarity with PV related hardware racking, electrical panels, conduit, and system installation best practices
  • Experience with residential backup and storage technologies, particularly as related to AC and DC coupled topologies
  • Knowledge of grid-tie and off-grid requirements
  • Proficient in National Electric Code, current and previous editions
  • Exposure to product listing of new designs under relevant NRTL standards
  • Knowledge of Distributed Energy Resource communication standards such as Sunspec RSD, IEEE 2030.5, etc.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
  • Regularly requires standing and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally requires lifting up to 50 lbs as appropriate to move product.

 

Work Conditions:

  • Open Office Environment – Primary
  • Warehouse Environment - Secondary
  • International and Domestic Travel up to 20% may be required
  • Ability to work in an office environment as well as out in the field with customers, test installations, etc.
