Job Summary: Counsel will serve as the Head of Legal for Goal Zero. Commercial generalist responsible for leading corporate strategic and tactical legal initiatives and working with Goal Zero senior management to provide effective advice on company strategies and their implementation.  Responsible for handling all legal matters for Goal Zero and managing the work of outside counsel as necessary. Counsel will be directly involved in complex business transactions, negotiating critical contracts, writing policies and procedures, preparing legal documents and investigating/resolving litigation, disputes and other claims. 

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Commercial:
    • Draft and negotiate commercial agreements (sales, product development, vendors, customer contracts, back-office processes, leases, and IT).
    • Provide legal support for various Operations, Finance, Sales, and Marketing activities.
    • Avoid and resolve litigation, complaints, disputes and other claims.
    • Manage Goal Zero’s intellectual property portfolio and work with marketing and product team to protect product names and new and patentable inventions.
    • Work with Operations and Sales to negotiate international agreements including manufacturing, vendor, and distribution agreements.
    • Manage product liability matters including manufacturing defect, product recalls, and litigation.
    • Negotiate and prepare marketing related agreements including athlete/ambassador agreements, e-commerce, advertising, events, product placement, and product licensing.

 

  • Compliance: 
    • Ensure compliance with various federal, state, and international consumer privacy and protection laws, including Conflict Minerals Reporting, FCPA, California Prop 65, California Consumer Privacy Act, GDPR, RoHS, REACH, and EU e-waste recycling and product safety regulations. 
    • Identify regulatory risks related to lithium-ion batteries and ensure compliance with newly emerging standards.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Open office environment
  • Travel approximately 15%

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Licensed Attorney with 3 - 8 years practicing law, preferably with law firm and in-house legal experience 
  • Experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working for/with a consumer product company
  • Intellectual property law experience, including patent law, trademark and copyright law, licensing of IP rights
  • Experience with international matters including regulatory, employment, solar tariff and trade, intellectual property, consumer privacy and protection, manufacturing, and distribution
