Job Summary:
Responsible for regulatory reporting requirements at the Public Utility Council of Texas (PUCT) and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) in support of NRG’s retail and wholesale businesses in Texas.  Provide support to NRG Energy’s legal division in matters relating to regulatory compliance,  and general commercial matters as needed. The candidate must have knowledge of the electric power industry in Texas with emphasis on the ERCOT competitive retail and wholesale markets. 

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will be involved in legal matters covering NRG’s businesses from a retail and regulatory perspective.
  • Assist in the preparation, review, and coordination of regulatory filings at the PUCT and ERCOT, including responsibility for all applicable reporting requirements.
  • Track and analyze Transmission and Distribution Utility tariff changes approved by the PUCT.
  • Act as supporting counsel, as needed, on contested cases at the PUCT.
  • Attend and participate in ERCOT stakeholder meetings and communicate with NRG’s businesses regarding implementation issues and areas of concern.
  • Provide legal support for various sales, marketing and operations activities.
  • Resolve litigation, complaints, disputes and other claims.
  • Draft and negotiate commercial agreements (e.g., sales, marketing, product development, vendors, customer contracts, back-office processes, leases, IT).

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to travel up to 20%.
  • Position will be located in Austin, Texas.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in TX.
  • 6-10 years of experience with a law firm, corporate legal department, or government agency.
  • Experience with PUCT matters (e.g., contested cases, rulemakings)
  • Knowledge of ERCOT competitive retail and wholesale markets.

  • Willingness and ability to develop skills in new areas.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of relevant areas including:  communication skills (verbal and written); project management skills; negotiation skills; the ability to provide a high level of client service and to do excellent work under difficult time pressures and deadlines.
  • Must be a hard-working, organized, and self-motivated.
