Job Summary: 

The Senior Manager is a strategic business role that must identify, lead, and support strategic and performance initiatives for the deregulated business in Canada. The role will report to the Senior Director, Go-to-Market Strategy & Head of Sales. This role will collaborate closely with the Retail Optimization team, Product, Marketing and Customer Management teams and other cross-functional groups to identify business problems and provide data-driven solutions to optimize Direct Energy’s (a division of NRG) acquisition and growth strategy. You must be a strong problem solver and effective communicator. You must thrive in a fast-paced environment, possess a high level of intellectual curiosity, and focus on generating results. This role will also focus on the development of new growth markets, customer segments and channels.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Drive and develop market strategies to increase consideration and achieve competitive advantage, utilizing market assessments, customer research and data, competitive analysis, marketplace trends and growth opportunities.

  • Identify segments in each market and determine which to target based on overall impact to the Direct Energy Home business for both Residential and SMB customers.

  • Develop executive level presentations to show growth and improvement opportunities on acquisition sales and the portfolio growth of energy and subscription-based services.

  • Identify opportunities to improve value propositions or product mix based on target segment or market.

  • Define and own goals and key performance metrics for Acquisition; monitor regularly to understand effectiveness of strategy, making recommendations for continuous improvement.

  • Lead cross-functional teams in the development of Go-to-Market strategies and major market initiatives, including selection of mass product offering.

  • Lead cross-functional development of market research plan to leverage consumer insights from internal and external sources to ensure the direction of the brand is based on consumer trends and brand awareness.

  • Provide strategic brief for Marketing Communications to develop mass and quarterly campaigns consistent with Direct Energy’s positioning. Inform creative and communication strategy.

  • Stay informed of current market trends and competitive developments to continually enhance Direct Energy’s strategic position in major markets.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or another related field.
  • MBA or graduate degree preferred.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in a Strategic Marketing or Business Strategy position.

  • Proven experience in developing go-to-market strategies for consumer-facing products or services.

  • Proven background in improving and optimizing business performance based on key metrics and goals.

  • Proficient Excel modeling skills and PowerPoint required.

  • Research driven mindset that is anchored in curiosity, learning, and balanced with excellent analytical, problem solving and project management/organization skills.

  • Strong work ethic, with an effective combination of business acumen, sound decision-making, and a bias for action; ability to act in a decisive, urgent, and committed way to achieve results; remain focused on deliverables and leverage resources to reach goals.

  • Comfortable working in a growth environment, collaborating with a new team and providing recommendations on improving existing processes.

  • Ability to prioritize, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Exceptional communicator (written and verbal), able to present a story and strategic options in a clear, concise manner.

  • Elevated level of motivation and aptitude for problem solving, with a strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent people skills as this position requires significant interface with outside stakeholders and the leadership team.

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.

  • Intellectual curiosity and continuous improvement drive.

  • Solid understanding of standard marketing principles and customer engagement tactics.

  • Ability to keep the customer impact at the forefront of all business decisions and activities.

  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to interface effectively with individuals in various functions and at various levels.

  • Thinks strategically, but also skilled in tactical execution.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload in a detailed and organized manner.

  • Able to utilize organizational and project management skills to direct work activities within critical path timelines.

  • Ability to establish strong relationships to influence perceptions and manage change.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior consulting experience.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities/Position requires employee to work using a laptop/computer screen.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Remote in Canada but must be local to Calgary, Toronto or Edmonton 

  • Some overtime required as special projects arise.

  • Some travel <10%.
