Overview:
Provide primary legal counsel and strategic advice for business units and corporate groups on real estate matters across NRG as well as subject matters expertise in related fields to assist other corporate activities including, development, procurement, M&A, litigation; responsible for implementing NRG’s strategic goals; ensuring appropriate risk management as well as compliance with law and NRG’s codes of conduct.


Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will be the primary point of contact for legal matters covering the breadth of industrial and commercial real estate management and transactions.

  • Direct legal support for real estate activities at NRG generation, mining and waste disposal facilities--review, draft, negotiate and implement industrial real estate agreements, including access agreements, licenses, easements, water rights, leases and purchase/sale agreements.  

  • Lead real estate aspects of retirement, redevelopment, and repowering transactions at current and former generation facilities. 

  • Execute on a deep understanding of commercial real estate transactions, primarily from a tenant perspective, from inception to execution and through operation and termination.

  • Assist Supply Chain and Engineering activities related to build-out, management and operation of commercial real estate and corporate facilities.

  • Provide subject matter expertise on real estate and title matters in M&A transactions.

  • Support real property litigation including:  condemnation and tax assessment/disputes.

  • Monitor and advise management and project teams of legal developments and trends including relevant administrative or judicial decisions, or changes in relevant statutes or regulations.

  • Work with NRG’s communications group on media interface relating to real estate.

  • Supervise and manage outside counsel within budgetary constraints; review and approve outside counsel invoices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Working Conditions: 

  • This position will report directly to the Assistant General Counsel, Operations.

  • Remote work schedule available, although hybrid (3 days in-office) work schedules will be considered for candidates in Houston, Austin, Princeton, Salt Lake City, or Pittsburgh.

  • Travel 15%-20% of the time may be required.


Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate, strong academic credentials and at least seven years of experience in a nationally recognized law firm or in house legal department.

  • Licensed to practice law in TX, CA, NY, IL, or other approved U.S. jurisdictions.

  • Business acumen and excellent commercial judgment.

  • Experience supporting industrial activities and commercial real estate transactions is mandatory; experience with electric utilities will be a significant benefit, experience in oil & gas helpful.

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member; ability to set priorities and to respond to changing demands from multiple sources.

  • Willingness and ability to develop skills in new areas.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in:  communication; project management; negotiation; providing a high level of client service and excellent work under time constraints.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Must be a hard-working, organized, intellectually curious critical thinker.
