GENERAL PURPOSE

 

Maintain, modify and install automated control systems and instrumentation at a power/cogeneration plant in an approved Safe, Regulatory Compliant and Efficient manner.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Follow safety procedures and safe working practices to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Perform safety related duties such as accepting work authorizations, hot work permits, confined space entry permits, etc.
  • Service, calibrate, troubleshoot and repair automated control systems, continuous emission monitors, plant instrumentation and electrical equipment up to 230kV.
  • Maintain drawings, specifications, test logs and other records.
  • Research equipment manuals and requisition repair parts.
  • Read, write and understand log books, work orders, procedures, timesheets, expense reports, requisitions and other documentation as required.
  • Tutor, instruct, train, and assist other personnel as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (con’t.)

 

  • Travel for training and/or other company business. This includes travel by automobile and commercial airlines.
  • Operate company vehicles including trucks, forklifts and other mobile equipment.
  • Perform plant housekeeping functions
  • Perform other duties as directed.
  • Work rotating or alternate shift schedule and overtime as required.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Must have a general understanding of electrical power generation and steam and gas turbine cycles. Must possess a thorough knowledge of electronic, electrical and mechanical instrumentation associated with complex analog and digital control systems. Must possess a good understanding of operating procedures, environmental and safety rules and regulations, and first aid procedures. 
  • Must be skilled in the use of test equipment for the detection and repair of faulty instrument and control devices.  Must be skilled in interpreting and following technical instruction furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic and schedule form.  Skilled in reading and interpreting blueprints, electrical diagrams, technical manuals and logic diagrams. Skilled in performing mathematical calculations to analyze and solve problems related to control process. Skilled in the use of personal computers, test gauges, digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes, and specialized test equipment such as manometers, potentiometers, conductivity bridges and signal generators and various hand tools.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to successfully function as a member and/or leader of a team and to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Required to routinely work from a step stool, portable ladder and climb vertical stationary ladders up to 50 feet.
  • Required to work in confined spaces that require employee to reach by stooping and/or crawling through tight clearances, or by lying down.
  • Some confined spaces can be accessed only by lowering oneself into the space feet first, after first removing a hatch weighing from 10 to 25 pounds.
  • Routinely required to stand for extended periods of time and to walk over uneven surfaces such as loose rock, open grating, and up and down staircases.
  • Required to carry calibration tools and hand tools generally weighing up to 30 pounds. Instruments may be irregularly shaped, and can weigh up to 75 pounds.  May be required to lift cylinders that contain high-pressured gases or compressed air, and are 4 to 5 feet in height and may weigh up to 75 pounds.
  • Required to work in compartments where temperatures may be as high as 130 degrees F.  Some instruments being serviced are mounted on surfaces where the temperature may reach 600 degrees F.
  • Work may involve threading and bending conduits and tubing, in addition to pulling wire bundles up to 1” diameter through conduits.  Wire termination may require long periods of kneeling.  Large electrical breakers may need to be manually pulled and pushed to complete work.
  • Repair responsibilities may include locating and correcting electrical grounds at voltages up to 230kV.  When installing high voltage grounds, the employee will lift ground connections overhead on poles. Overhead work may require the employee to carry and move portable ladders and/or work from mobile equipment.
  • Employee may be required to work long periods of time on a computer terminal.
  • Employee may be required to work flexible work hours.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

 

Approximately 70% outdoors, balance inside.

 

 

EDUCATION

 

Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.  Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of work experience and technical training required. Associates Degree from technical school is desired. ISA CCST (Certified Control Systems Technician) to level II or higher preferred.

 

7.0      EXPERIENCE

         

Must possess a minimum of three years' experience in the troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of instrumentation, electrical and control systems at a power plant or similar industrial setting.
